I happen to have known a married, Catholic couple that chose to have a partial birth abortion in the 1980's (after legalization) because their baby was so severely deformed that the doctors said it would live only minutes after birth. That was a medically necessary decision based on the professional opinions of the doctors and the woman herself in consultation with her husband.

Partial birth abortion was made legal in order to make it convienent to get rid of children with birth defects that couldnt be known until late term. If the child is unable to survive, nature takes care of things.
