I really enjoyed Ayn until I dug into her personal life.

I've really lost all respect I had for the woman. I can't take her or her literature seriously anymore...

Obviously her "personal life" was not respected by the likes of you. Pay attention to the message, not the messenger.
 Quoting: beebee

By personal life, I mean

"I think it's a monstrous thing — the whole progression of everything they're doing — to feature, or answer, or favor the incompetent, the retarded, the handicapped, including, you know, the kneeling buses and all kinds of impossible expenses. I do not think that the retarded should be ~allowed~ to come ~near~ children. Children cannot deal, and should not have to deal, with the very tragic spectacle of a handicapped human being. When they grow up, they may give it some attention, if they're interested, but it should never be presented to them in childhood, and certainly not as an example of something ~they~ have to live down to."

- Ayn Rand, The Age of Mediocrity, Q & A Ford Hall Forum, April, 1981

The message is worthless in my eyes. There are plenty of authors with the same message, who's ideas aren't rooted in hate.

WRONG! That's not what it's about.

Fist of all, it is a fantastic story - a very long read but I think you will be hard-pressed to put it down. As you read the book you will be amazed at the number of parallels with what is going on in our country today (and has been for quite some time).

Summary? Very difficult to do and give the story any justice. Perhaps a good way to provide a kind of summary is to consider the aim/intent behind those on this forum that have suggested that we all just stop paying taxes so the corrupt system in Washington (and their PTB controllers)can finally come to a screeching halt. Closely aligned to this thinking is the idea that it is, in reality, WE that truly hold the power in this country,,, and that includes ALL productive (and that is a KEY word here) members of society, including upper, middle, and lower class people. In other words, if "they" (i.e., TPTB, etc.) think they're so very powerful, smart, etc. let them come up with what they need to live by using THEIR OWN productive efforts. Bottom line? It won't happen - they NEED us,,, ALL of us.

Well, that's pretty much what I got out of the book. Does anybody else agree with this?

P.S. any John Galt's on this forum?

Do Michelle Obama's toned, taut, and sexy upper arms figure into the plot?

I read atlas shrugged at about age 21 - at the time I thought it was an amazing book and still think it is a great story. However, now I see it as a lot of propaganda (all those nauseating "speeches" with are grand standing soap box lectures,) - the book has you sympathizing with the super rich that hate social progams, but when you grow up you realize that we need social programs to help those who need it. Atlas S. is a fantasy book.

Summary of Atlas Shrugged

Super rich industrial power people feel oppressed by a government that forces them to pay into the programs that help the poor. The super rich people, one by one, disappear and "let go" of society, and society falls apart because of this. The author sprikles her philosophy everywhere in the book with characters giving long winded speeches. That's about it.

Riker - this is my favorite book of all time, hands down.

I am (sheepishly) reading it for the first time, and I am absolutely blown away...

And to read it now, with what is going on in the world, in government and the economy...

Crazy!
 Quoting: Riker

Here's my favorite. Anyone will recognize that this is precisely what has happened to our so called "justice" (just-us) system.

This excerpt is from “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand, first published in 1957, and explains quite clearly why the need for so many laws and why our prisons are home to so many innocent people.

"Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."
