Catholic Church shamed by Irish abuse report

Yahoo News

2009-05-21

DUBLIN – After a nine-year investigation, a commission published a damning report Wednesday on decades of rapes, humiliation and beatings at Catholic Church-run reform schools for Ireland's castaway children.

The 2,600-page report painted the most detailed and damning portrait yet of church-administered abuse in a country grown weary of revelations about child molestation by priests.

The investigation of the tax-supported schools uncovered previously secret Vatican records that demonstrated church knowledge of pedophiles in their ranks all the way back to the 1930s.

Wednesday's five-volume report on the probe — which was resisted by Catholic religious orders — concluded that church officials shielded their orders' pedophiles from arrest amid a culture of self-serving secrecy.

You think we would be more worried about this shit instead of screaming its the end of the world because a black man dares speak at Notre Dame.

Bring this up on campus and all you hear are crickets.

Re: Catholic Church shamed by Irish abuse report
"A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from," Ireland's Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse concluded.

Victims of the abuse, who are now in their 50s to 80s, lobbied long and hard for an official investigation. They say that for all its incredible detail, the report doesn't nail down what really matters — the names of their abusers.

"I do genuinely believe that it would have been a further step towards our healing if our abusers had been named and shamed," said Christine Buckley, 62, who spent the first 18 years of her life in a Dublin orphanage where children were forced to manufacture rosaries — and were humiliated, beaten and raped whether they achieved their quota or not.

The Catholic religious orders that ran more than 50 workhouse-style reform schools from the late 19th century until the mid-1990s offered public words of apology, shame and regret Wednesday. But when questioned, their leaders indicated they would continue to protect the identities of clergy accused of abuse — men and women who were never reported to police, and were instead permitted to change jobs and keep harming children.

The church ruled the country.
I was lucky, I was only taught by nuns and monks till age 13, I was never sexually abused but I was beaten and terrorized.

If you still need proof of the inherant darkness of the Catholic church here it is in all its ugly glory.

And please remember, it was not just Ireland, abuse by Catholic clergy and nuns is well documented throughout the world, including America.

What is wrong here?
Does the Catholic church attract these types?
Or does it create them?

I think it was mostly an Irish problem. Most American abusers were Irish. Even the Canadian and Australian cases involed Irishmen. So basically, many Irish are gay to the point where they becomee priests and abuse boys.

Excellent questions. What do you think? I think most religions attract more than they create, but not all went in looking to abuse children, then something changes. Your grandchildren will still be dealing with the problems created by this abuse.

What you could have in the Irish scenario is a mix of this incredibly repressed twisted view of sexuality and the basic Stanford effect.

It then stands to reason that the abuse is focused on sexuality.

It's a scientifically proven fact. Many pro-pedophile activists are political offshoots of the gay movement. Also, there was even one priest who was a member of NAMBLA.

Re: Catholic Church shamed by Irish abuse report
It is a fact that the Catholic Church has a stronghold in Ireland and that many of the priests in the U.S. came from Ireland. I think the practice of sexual repression and sexual guilt by the Catholic Church is partly to blame for the problem. Consider this:

The Catholic Church does not allow priests or nuns to marry

The Catholic Church teaches that masturbation is a sin ("self abuse")

Sexuality is a natural human drive. When it is suppressed with shame and guilt, it is bound to come out in violent, ugly ways.

This is then passed on to successive generations. I know of so many Catholic that a wracked by guilt. It is sad, really.

They should be tried and convicted for their crimes. This includes harboring known pedophiles. It may be time to scrap priestly celibacy. That's not a normal lifestyle for most healthy men.

Christ, the frickin bloody church is guilty of abuse in every frickin bloody country it ever tried to "save."

Columbus: "I certify to you (the Native People) that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter your country and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of Their Highness. We shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make slaves of them..."

As one eyewitness recalls:
"Once the Indians were in the woods, the next step was to form squadrons and pursue them, and whenever the Spaniards found them, they pitilessly slaughtered everyone like sheep in the corral. ... So they would cut an Indian's hands and leave them dangling by a shred of skin and they would send him on saying 'Go now, spread the news to your chiefs.'...

Some Christians encounter an Indian woman, who was carrying in her arms a child at suck; and since the dog they had with them was hungry, they tore the child from the mother's arms and flung it still living to the dog, who proceeded to devour it before the mother's eyes..."

In less than a decade after Columbus' first landing, the native population of the island of Hispaniola - thousands and thousands of people - had dropped by a third to a half. Before the next century ended, the population of Cuba and many other Caribbean islands had been virtually exterminated. [S63-70]

Sadly, there's more, much, much more!!

Reverend Solomon Stoddard, one of New England's most esteemed religious leaders, in "1703 formally proposed to the Massachusetts Governor that the colonists be given the financial wherewithal to purchase and train large packs of dogs 'to hunt Indians as they do bears'."

By the 1860s, "in Hawai'i the Reverend Rufus Anderson surveyed the carnage that by then had reduced those islands' native population by 90 percent or more, and he declined to see it as tragedy; the expected total die-off of the Hawaiian population was only natural, this missionary said, somewhat equivalent to 'the amputation of diseased members of the body'."

"The Spaniards took babies from their mothers' (Indians) breasts, grabbing them by the feet and smashing their heads against rocks... (In Psalms we read – blessed is he who smashes the little ones against the rocks – Psalms 137:9).

They built a long gibbet, low enough for the toes to touch the ground to prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles... Then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive."

. When Columbus landed in America in 1492, he mistook it for India and called the native inhabitants "Indians." It was his avowed aim to "convert the heathen Indians to our Holy Faith" that warranted the enslaving and exporting of thousands of Native Americans. That such treatment resulted in complete genocide did not matter as much as that these natives had been given the opportunity of everlasting life through their exposure to Christianity. The same sort of thinking also gave Westerners license to rape women. In his own words, Columbus described how he himself "took [his] pleasure" with a native woman after whipping her "soundly" with a piece of rope.

Before we get too far into this discussion, I need to point out something very important.

Be sure not to confuse Christianity with the Roman Catholic Church... they are NOT the same things!

People like to point to the Roman Catholic Church and all of the evil it does and accuse Christianity of being evil. Just because the Pope and the Vatican claim to be Christian does not make it true.

Catholicism is a cult with pagan and gnostic beliefs, and a very non-Biblical theology. Catholicism may get dressed up as Christianity, do not be fooled, it is the wolf in sheeps clothing.

A pedophile is a pedophile above all things.

They are a member of no religion, profession or volunteer effort. They will put on whatever costume places them in a position of authority over children and provides them cover from the adults who care for them and who protect them.

Teachers are not pedophiles, but pedophiles are teachers;
Coaches and Sunday school teachers are not pedophiles, but pedophiles are drawn to their ranks.
It is the same with the clergy in all denominations.

These monsters go wherever there are children.

In my opinion, pedophilia should be a capital crime.

But before anyone becomes smug about judging pedophilia in the Catholic Church, remember that the insurance companies who pay the judgements from these cases, have found that the problem is much worse in the Protestant denominations and have condemned the Baptists for killing the institution of a pedophile database for their own churches in 2008.

I heard about that on NPR radio the other day. It was shocking to hear what they did to those kids, but not surprising in the harsh Catholic religion environment. Catholics created and became masters of their own hellish dungeons with vulnerable kids as their subjects.
