Jack Londonīs Prediction of Bioterror in 2013
The Scarlet Plague, Jack London, First Published 1915

Summary:

It is the year 2073. A boy and his grandfather, clad in animal skins, are walking through deep woods. Having fought off a bear, they come to a fire on the beach, where several other boys sit watching their sheep. Their grandfather asks for a crab and they tease him with empty shells until he cries. Finally, they relent and ask him to tell his story about the past and the scarlet plague.

The grandfather had been a literature professor at The University of California-San Francisco. In the summer of 2013, rumors began that a new plague was killing people in New York. Those infected developed a scarlet rash, had a few convulsions, then settled into a sleep-like state in which they became numb and died, their bodies decomposing almost immediately. The entire process took at most an hour, but sometimes as little as ten minutes. Bacteriologists died even as they tried to find a vaccine. People began dying by the millions. The plague finally reached San Francisco and mayhem broke out. The wealthy tried to flee the city and the poor murdered them and looted in revenge for their long oppression.

The professor survived. He lived alone in the Grand Canyon for three years, then set out to see if anyone else was alive, finding a workingman and his woman slave. He met others and began a family which included the boys to whom he is telling his story. There is no means of communicating across the country or to other nations, since the fires set by looters consumed nearly every structure. Society has been set back to a nomad existence. The boys do not believe most of their grandfatherīs story. They fight amongst one another and with him in a language that is only partly English. Finally, they rise, leaving the grandfather to straggle along behind into the wilderness.

Re: Jack Londonīs Prediction of Bioterror in 2013
one of jack londonīt best but seldom known books was īthe star roverī. it is based on the true story of ed morrell who was able to astral travel and remember his past lives during his torture and incarceration. it was one of my fatherīs favorite books of all time when he was growing up as a child in the early 1900s. it is not for everyone though. ed morrell went on to write his own autobiography titled "The 25th Man".

from amazon.com:

"The Star Rover is the story of San Quentin death-row inmate Darrell Standing, who escapes the horror of prison life—and long stretches in a straitjacket—by withdrawing into vivid dreams of past lives, including incarnations as a French nobleman and an Englishman in medieval Korea. Based on the life and imprisonment of Jack London’s friend Ed Morrell, this is one of the author’s most complex and original works. As Lorenzo Carcaterra argues in his Introduction, The Star Rover is “written with energy and force, brilliantly marching between the netherworlds of brutality and beauty.”

Re: Earths leaders are no differant than school yard bullies

If you line all the leaders up, itīs just a handful compared to the human population. Why then canīt we take back our world and stop these bullies from destroying it along with all of us?
Because we let them, thatīs why.
A world without violence would be a wonderful place to live. Weīd only have to worry about taking care of each other and Iīd sooner do that than hurt or kill someone.
If I was to hurt someone by accident, Iīd feel terrible. Iīm a former US Marine myself and I never killed but I woke up and said no more. I donīt want to be a part of this. I think it was when I saw my friends get blown up. I think it was when I got all these holes in my body and almost lost my life. Iīm sorry it took so long

"If you line all the leaders up, itīs just a handful compared to the human population" - line them up with a view to what?

If you get rid of them there is always someone ready to jump right into their place....somebody who could well be worse.

Look around you, how many "would be" tyrants do you come across every single day, how many people when given half a chance would be the most ruthless and odious people when given unlimited power. Oh sure they would dress up their selfish agendaīs with all sorts of high-minded bullshit - but the end result would be the same. The subjugation of the masses by an ego driven maniac.

Re: Jack Londonīs Prediction of Bioterror in 2013
"YOUNG MEN: The lowest aim in your life is to become a soldier. The good soldier never tries to distinguish right from wrong. He never thinks; never reasons; he only obeys. If he is ordered to fire on his fellow citizens, on his friends, on his neighbors, on his relatives, he obeys without hesitation. If he is ordered to fire down a crowded street when the poor are clamoring for bread, he obeys and see the grey hairs of age stained with red and the life tide gushing from the breasts of women, feeling neither remorse nor sympathy. If he is ordered off as a firing squad to execute a hero or benefactor, he fires without hesitation, though he knows the bullet will pierce the noblest heart that ever beat in human breast.

"A good soldier is a blind, heartless, soulless, murderous machine. He is not a man. His is not a brute, for brutes kill only in self defense. All that is human in him, all that is divine in him, all that constitutes the man has been sworn away when he took the enlistment roll. His mind, his conscience, aye, his very soul, are in the keeping of his officer. No man can fall lower than a soldier—it is a depth beneath which we cannot go." — Jack London

I have that book on my shelf of good books, right next to "Earth Abides," by George R. Stewart. Read it. It is the BEST, IMO, of the scenarios presented in "Scarlet Plague" and "The Stand." Londonīs was likely the first, then came Stewartsī version, which is much like Londonīs, but more in depth and well written. I like Kingīs take on it as well, but "Earth Abides" is my favorite. Read it 4 times so far.

Re: Jack Londonīs Prediction of Bioterror in 2013
So, this is indeed true:

[link to www.scribd.com]

See page 34:

"It was in the summer of 2013 that the Plague came. I was twenty-seven years old, and well do I remember it. Wireless despatches—"Hare-Lip spat loudly his disgust, and Granser hastened to makeamends."We talked through the air in those days, thousands andthousands of miles. And the word came of a strange disease that had broken out in New York. There were seventeenmillions of people living then in that noblest city of America.Nobody thought anything about the news. It was only a small thing. There had been only a few deaths. It seemed, though, that they had died very quickly, and that one of the first signs othe disease was the turning red of the face and all the body.Within twenty-four hours came the report of the first case inChicago. And on the same day, it was made public that London, the greatest city in the world, next to Chicago, had been secretly fighting the plague for two weeks and censoringthe news despatches—that is, not permitting the word to goforth to the rest of the world that London had the plague."

The book refers to it as the "Red Plague".

And low and behold, World War Z also comes out on the summer solstice with a story line built around a biological epidemic. Very curious timing.

I also read this week that the Black Plague was dated as the year 1347. That is indeed the year of the European outbreak:

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

What is an Aha here is that 1347 is exactly 666 years ago. Do the math. It is true.

I guess the conclusion for me here is that we have been amply warned and that 2013 feels like a trigger year for a biological event of some kind. It might be worth having on hand a family supply of rubber gloves, hydrogen peroxide and N95 masks. Other ideas?
