So far this year, it's been pretty slow. The bookings are off about 50%, maybe a bit more. I'm hoping things pick up in June or July, but at the moment, I'm just this side of unemployed. Of course, the good news is, I finally get to do all the things to the house I haven't had time to do. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. In ten years we'll look back on this moment, laugh nervously, and quickly change the subject. |

I've been self employed since 03 and things slowed way down for me last year too. but i still managed to stay afloat with the money i saved. I assume (I could be wrong) that if you have some sort of steady income you are staying afloat too until your storm passes. As Above, So Below Work Smarter, Not Harder |

My point was people who consider themselves "under-employed" aren't exactly suffering, and aren't in the same category as someone who is unemployed. As Above, So Below Work Smarter, Not Harder |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 688823 United States 05/27/2009 12:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I`m actually Happily unemployed. Here in CA. they dish out $1900 a month, The claims last like 18 months. I plan on soaking them for the full 18 months, it`s my friken money anyway I have worked solid for the past 15 years. I have no rent as I moved into the cottage out back at my friends house. I do all the yard work, take out the garbage, keep the place looking clean and work on their vehicles for free. My day`s consist of 2 hours work, then the rest of the day is spent fishing and fucking off. I got plenty money saved to ensure a fun filled 18 months. I have never been on unemployment before and I`m sure I could find a good job if I want but I am so sick of paying never ending taxes that go to all these fricken illegals in this state that I have decided to join them in soaking the system.. |

It depends on where you live and if you have to take care of other people. in 01 and 02 I was tired of the rat race so I quit my higher paying job for one where i earned roughly the same. Of course I was single with no kids. I moved into a studio apartment for $400 a month utilities included, spent about 300-500 mth on food (still eating well) had high speed internet, over 100 cable channels, and car insurance. My car was already payed for. I lived quite well. In 03 I decided I wanted more and started my own business. I got married that year and got my wife pregnant so I figured out how i could get even more money. As Above, So Below Work Smarter, Not Harder |

Assembler/C++ programmer and I still occasionally write software for personal use. I was trained in how to receive unemployment benefits without being excessively harassed by welfare agencies and that is what I have been on for almost the entire 16 years. I cop a fair bit of flack from people who are understandably upset that I have spent their tax dollars on booze and a surfing lifestyle over such an inordinately long period of time. |
