Anonymous Coward User ID: 667758 United States 05/27/2009 07:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had read some time ago that some of the best places are in the Southwestern section of Oregon. There are no significant military targets and there are few nuclear targets downwind that the prevailing winds would bring ash/fallout from. Also the terrain is well generally well defensible without being inhospitable. |

Eureka User ID: 688273 United States 05/27/2009 08:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The government did a study on this during the cold war and they determined that Eureka CA (Humboldt County) was the safest place to be during a nuclear war. It is a Pacific ocean costal town with a bay 280 miles north of San Francisco and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. There is a constant wind coming in from the sea that prevents any fall out from hitting the city. Nice little town of 75,000 in the redwood forest. Heavy on fishing and hunting. Used to be a fishing port with a lumber industry. Those are pretty much gone now. All the mills are closed and the fleet has moved north to Dutch Harbor. No industry to speak of and not on anyone's hit list for a nuke. If you like the outdoors, you would love Eureka. Humboldt county is also known as the capital of the marijuana industry. Hippies moved north into the redwood forest aound Garberville (50 miles south of Eureka) in the late 60's and became farmers. |
