Re: Canary seeds....
You are correct, bird seed quality is NOT safe for human consumption.

Silica fibers in bird food quality are similar in structure to asbestos and are directly linked to esophageal cancer!

There is "Silica Fiber Free" alpiste available at [link to www.alpiste.com]

Re: Canary seeds....
I have been researching this today and I have found out that when you buy it, you need to look for "silica free" canary seed. The silica is the hair like husk that resembles asbestos and is linked to cancer of the esophigus. Hope I spelled that right.

Re: Canary seeds....
Silica fibers in alpiste linked to cancer ?
There may be health risks associated with bird food quality alpiste. It contains silica fibers that are similar in structure to asbestos. Other than that, it seems to have some amazing benefits.

By the way, silica free alpiste: [link to www.alpiste.com]

I've seen your listing in Craigs list too, but you don't give any specific info on where to buy this so called silica free seed. So?

FYI News; A lot of the stuff that we eat can cause cancer. Just breathing the smog, if you live in a big city will cause cancer to most people eventually.

As to the "Silica Fibers?" What most people don't mention is that if you filter the Alpiste Milk through "The Sock Filter" it captures most of the filaments hairs and you don't end up in the bathroon turning to mush. That's also what they do not tell you about silica free Alpiste Milk. They simply process it better because all foods have hairs.

No one ever mentions the full process of making the Alpiste Milk and everyone is left to their own on this. But the "Sock Filter" is the most important part of the process. You can not just filter this through a regular coffee filter. It simply wont work.

A "Sock Filter" is a reusable fabric filter that is also used to filter coffee the old fashion way. The fabric will capture the tiny silica fibers (hair) and the filter will clog up at the bottom when it does. The trik is not to squeeze the sock but to lift up the bottom part during the filtering process just a bit when you see that it slows down to a stop.

Remember that squeezing the "Sock" will cause some of the fibers to pressure out but holding the bottom up just a bit will force the milk to find new ways out of the sock.

Just one more thing; The Sock filter is a slow process for the Alpiste milk. So if you see that the process is rather quick or that there is a steady stream from the seams of the sock then the sock is not filtering out all of the hairs.

The whole point to filtering the milk is that you do not want to drink any of the husk of the seeds or the hairs. You just want the enzymes that mixes into the water and that is all. But even if you do drink hairs and husk, the Coca Cola that you drink with your meal probably causes you more damage to your health then the husk of seeds or hairs of silica fibers will.

Re: Canary seeds....
I started with 2 daily drinks of canary seed milk 2 weeks ago. I am diabetic, with blood sugar levels of over 300 or 400 unless I give myself high insulin dosis (60 units, 2 times a day). I have noticed that since several days ago, my blood sugar is going down. Last night, at bedtime, it was 144, so I didn't inject myself with insulin. This morning the blood sugar level was 137. I didn't change my eating habits, but I have noticed that I am not really hungry.

I have heard claims that the canary seed milk helps to lose weight and to have more energy. I didn't check my weight, but I have also noticed that I wake up with more energy. Let's see how the thing progresses.

This is how I prepare the drink:
- I put at night 5 spoons of canary seed in water.
- In the morning, I throw the water, and I add 4 cups of fresh water.
- I liquified the mixture at high speed for 3-5 minutes
- I strain it, and drink half in the morning, half at night.
I heard also that some people drink it during the day.

It doesn't taste so good, but not so bad either. Tastes better if cold.

It is amazingly cheap. I bought it in the Internet from the company Doctors Foster and Smith. 5 pounds cost $ 8. Estimating my usage, 5 pounds will be enough for 2 months!
I recommend to buy it in that way. Many pet stores have versions with vitamins, etc that you don't need.
You can order it at DrsFosterSmith.com, or by phone at 1-800-826-7206.

I have seen in the Internet amazing claims about canary seed properties. I just tell you how apaprently is working for ME.

Alpiste Seed (Canary Seed) Milk
type 2 diabetes

I have been drinking this milk for about 2 months now. 8 oz. In the a.m. And right before I go to bed. I don't have high blood pressure but my weak spot is my liver, so I'm taking it for that and because a girl is always looking to lose some weight. I am 56, 5'4 and 155. I have not lost any weight. But I don't have any fat rolls anywhere on my body., never did. I attribute that to a vegan lifestyle.

Anyway, my mom started taking it with me and her high blood pressure has normalized to the point where she has stopped taking her blood pressure medication.

Regarding the 'silica fibers', I have found that the guy posting these messages all over the internet just wants to scare you so that you can buy his alpiste from alpiste.com. He keeps writing about "research shows..." and there is no research anywhere except one done in the 1980's on rats. This alpiste.com is sold at an outrageous price. He talks about the seed having a fine hair on it- I have examined the seed under a microscope and see no hair on it just a SMOOTH shiny seed with a hard shell on it.

But just in case, after I blend the milk, I let it sit for a few minutes. I then SKIM the top off, with a spoon, of the non-eatable husk. (Even the birds discard that part) then I strain it unto the container. Now here is a tip that I have not read anyone mention before - once you slowly and carefully strain the liquid - there will be seed at the bottom of your blender - let it fall into your strainer and then take a spoon and eat it. It is sooo delicious and such a waste to throw it out. It has a nutty taste and I am sure is loaded with protein and fiber. Remember, Blend, let it sit a few minutes, what falls to the bottom is live, eatable seed - the top is what gets thrown out.

I wish everyone a happy healthy life. CHEERS.

Those who believe that the birdseed was only for “birds” do not know the properties and multiple benefits of this nutritious seed. The canary seed is more nutritious and powerful on this planet. It is rich in vegetable protein, high-quality, mind you, about six tablespoons of millet have more protein than two or three kilos of meat, but also proteins birdseed are not harmful or difficult to digest, but are very good stable amino acid assimilation .

Properties and nutrients from birdseed:

Form of consumption

You can drink and, as such, in salads or soups, smoothies and even dressing. You can also prepare a nutritious and powerful enzyme birdseed milk as follows:

MILK ALPISTE

Soak five tablespoons of millet in pure water the night before. In the morning, remove the water that has been dipped, soaked and put the birdseed in the blender, you can add soy milk and fruit to taste or simply liquefy and birdseed’s milk sweetened with honey (no sugar), which is a nutritious milk and energy to start the day (morning) and to finish it (at night, take hot). It is very important not to sweeten the milk with white sugar, which is very harmful and irritating on your body, besides destroying the enzymes and the powerful effect of this milk. Avoid refined sugar whenever you can, and if you have small children do not get used to the milk sugar or candy.

Re: Canary seeds....
Here is an abstract done on canary seed (alpiste) consumption and hypertension and blood sugar regulation in diabetics:
source: [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[link to www.alpiste.com]

Abstract
Canary grass is used as traditional food for diabetes and hypertension treatment. The aim of this work is to characterize the biological activity of encrypted peptides released after gastrointestinal digestion of canary seed proteins. Canary peptides showed 43.5% inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) and 73.5% inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity. An isolated perfused rat heart system was used to evaluate the canary seed vasoactive effect. Nitric oxide (NO), a major vasodilator agent, was evaluated in the venous effluent from isolated perfused rat heart. Canary seed peptides (1 μg/mL) were able to induce the production of NO (12.24 μM) in amounts similar to those induced by captopril (CPT) and bradykinin (BK). These results show that encrypted peptides in canary seed have inhibitory activity against DPPIV and ACE, enzymes that are targets for diabetes and hypertension treatments.
