Every Swiss male, except for cripples, is subject to serving his country as a member of the Swiss Armed Forces and is equipped with an assault rifle and ammo that he keeps at home. That lasts until men turn 50 and then the gun becomes property of the soldier now turned veteran.
From 20 to 50 they all are called to base training and 3 1/2 week long (paid for)repetition courses every year from 20-30 and afterwards every 3 years from 30-40 and once from 40-50.
The Swiss have rarely any incident involving military guns/ammo since they carefully adhere to the doctrine "whatever is not forbidden is compulsory". Take it from me, I am a 65 year old Swiss living in the wonderful USA but have served for 30 years in the Swiss Armed Forces.
