Report abusive post | Any Land Rover Discovery Owners?
| Quote |
Just wondered if any of you has any experience with them? I have been looking at them for about three months, more than likely I will get one this summer. Just looking for advice, which years are best, what to look out for , where to get parts, etc.
thanks much

Looking at teaming it up with one of these:

Sweet vehicle for a small SUV but parts and service are incredibly expensive. Ended up with a slightly used Ford Escape which shares Freelander DNA. The Discovery would have the same expenses, no doubt, with probably a slightly higher carrying capacity. I still see some old ones on the road.
Around Denver, low-mileage larger Land Rovers are going for next to nothing, just like Excursions and Expeditions. |

At least once a month, she had the thing in the shop for some problem or other. The upside was that the dealer was also a Jag dealer and let her use one of those while they were working on the 'Rover. They look nice, but get bad mileage and will eat you up in repair and service unless you can do the work yourself.
Funny thing is, when I was in India in '96, the old 'Rovers left by the British was the transportation of choice, especially in Darjeeling. At every stop, the drivers would be constantly tinkering with something; pull the carb off and work on it. But they always had them running. |

i guess i will check the craigslist for the Denver area then, i am in the midwest and been checking that region extensively
yes they are finicky, and i am by a dealer, have found a good supply of used parts, and have several friends that are mechanics, whom i should probably take out for dinner
any other suggestions on best years, upgrades, etc. would certainly be welcomed :) When peaceful revolution becomes impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable.

You'd think you were paying for a new transmission, not a few belts and a thermostat. Broke down a lot, couldn't keep buying super expensive parts so now it's gone. |

that seems to be the mantra. yet i know people who swear by them. i know certain years have a lot more problems than others. i also have located a few units to use strictly for parts , cheap.
a tune up starts at $1,000 When peaceful revolution becomes impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable.

Them mofo's better be gold plated.....$1000 for a tune up is gods way of telling you that you make too much money! |

but i have a buddy that has one and loves it, and he lives in a barn, i shit you not, and does all the work himself. When peaceful revolution becomes impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable.

There were a LOT of them made and they are rugged as hell. A rover will easily run for 200k miles given moderate maintenance. They're amazing cars.
My full sized rover looks as good at the Beverly Hills Hotel as it does on a back road fording a stream.
And it's done both! |

The alleged problems were supposedly caused by the combined use of incompatible metals (steel and aluminum?) and the resulting electrolytic reaction which fueled major corrosion in this area and the subsequent failure of the panel and glass. (this problem was supposedly corrected by ford)
I sat in one once and hated it, the door was too close to me when it was closed and my body placement was so high I felt like I was on a rocket platform set to go through the windshield. |

They have a lot of accessories ( roof racks. ladders, sliders, bumpers, etc.) that I have bought and have been great to deal with. For what it's worth...... Peace out.......

They are not terribly well assembled, the parts are not of terribly high quality but cost a fortune, and it is very difficult to find mechanics who understand them terribly well.
Nice lookers though.
Look, if you need a four wheel drive vehicle there are MUCH better choices. non sufficit Orbis

You sound like you're stuck on the idea of getting one, so good luck and don't get a 2003.
I'd go with a late 80's early 90's Range Rover! Not that over priced Ford piece of shit. |

Well, lets get a few questions out of the way.
Do you drive off road? Clearly winters are bad so do you need a 4WD for driving on regular roads in the winter? The kind of vehicle you select depends on the answer to these questions. non sufficit Orbis

if you do a lot of offroading the defender is the more capable vehicle but if you do a lot of road driving youre better off with the discovery for comfort and stability. |
