All suffering is countered with good times and things in the proportion needed for any given spirit so as not to totally crush them from the positive gains of this existence. Quoting: Saxon (777)
I think you have it most of it but as pointed out the suffering of innocents abounds and what growth could possibly come of it for the innocent. And this answer will take a leap past logic and what is conventional reason to more imaginative and intuitive (spiritually instinctive if you prefer) realms.
"We" suffer for "our" brothers sins. We do this because it does it does "grow" all of us even if it might not grow an individual. If the concept of communal suffering seems foreign that is because you aren't in heaven yet. "Unity" and the understanding of this final and utterly complete and selfless (without evil) unity has always been the goal. We are the children of God and we are still in gestation, when the the day of our birth truly comes "we are" will cease and "I am" will be all that is left.
