Of course, he is a trends examiner, not a prophet. He even explains how he does it, current actions set future trends. In all of those listed you can guess what his inspiration was for each prediction. It also seems in some of those he was possibly considering international investors who invest in markets over seas. From here in America it is hard to tell if these were accurate somewhere in the world. From that point, all you have to do is spend some time learning about what is going on with our economy and you can see what his inspiration is for saying these things about the future of America. I think he'll be right in the end. Maybe not as bad as he and a lot of people expect, but at least we were expecting it. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 776822 China 10/03/2009 01:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | GERALD CELENTE IS Right - 2000s predictions. Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017"The videophone, meanwhile, will keep us in touch with faraway relatives. Today when we use the phone, we are still communicating by radio. With the addition of the videophone's visual dimension, long-distance communication will be more like television." 100% RIGHT Guess you missed out on the whole internet communication revolution to say his prediction was wrong. "By the year 2000, getting and staying healthy will no longer be a hobby but a necessity for survival. The health information people need will be available; the difficulty will be distinguishing the gold from the dross. Those who are serious about their millennium resolutions to take better care of themselves will begin by checking into one of the new longevity centers springing up around the country. Longevity centers will be to health what colleges are to education--equal parts spa, health club, hospital, detoxification center, fat farm, and resort. They will be staffed with medical doctors well versed in both state-of-the-art medicine and alternative therapies, as well as nutritionists, acupuncturists, herbalists, chiropractors, and a diverse group of physical, emotional, and spiritual therapists and healers." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% RIGHT You are just too poor to visit one of these centers. "The return of individuality will spell an end to the multibillion-dollar fashion industry The bulk of day-to-day apparel will consist of durable mass-produced casual wear. Where appearance matters, the combination of computerization and declining wages will bring custom tailoring back to an affordable price range. The result--personally designed "smartwear"--will bridge the gap between casual and formal: appearance-enhancing but comfortable." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% RIGHT Been to the Gap in the past ten years? "Worker Revolts. One of the underreported stories of 1996 was the massive street demonstrations in Indonesia, where people were tired of working for slave wages. We're going to see more workers fighting for higher pay, even in developed countries. It happened in Germany when the government tried cutting pensions and health benefits. In Canada, demonstrations almost shut down the Toronto Stock Exchange--and Canadians never protest anything." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% RIGHT Just wasn't reported in the US. "Dr. Death. This summer the Supreme Court will likely rule on physician-assisted suicide. Whatever the Court's decision, assisted suicide is becoming part of our culture. Growing numbers of terminally ill people simply don't want to live, and they will seek out euthanasia just as they sought abortions when they didn't want children. Also, as the population ages and medical costs rise, profit-hungry HMOS won't want to pay for medical care for people whose lives are nearly over." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% RIGHT Assisted suicide happens everyday. People just don't talk about it. "The public is going to demand that the government break up powerful corporate monopolies. One industry that will almost certainly suffer the wrath of trust busters is health care. There are insurance companies that also own HMOs, hospitals, and drug manufacturers--the entire spectrum of medical services." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% Right The public demanded, but was ignored. "So the next social upheaval in America won't come from Generation X but from today's teens and preteens. They will be tomorrow's revolutionaries. And just as the boomers protested the Vietnam War, these kids are going to march against materialism and greed. They'll be driven to it for a number of reasons, one being economic. They are not going to have the same opportunities that the boomers or even Generation Xers have had. Conspicuous consumption simply won't be an option for them." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% RIGHT Where have you been for the past 9 years, in a Coma? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 799070 United States 10/21/2009 04:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Actually those are all simply generalizations that you can use to back up your story. The internet was beginning to take off in 1997 so why wouldn't you figure that video was possible. Trends about mass producing clothes? Really it is cheaper to buy a tailored good rather than a mass produced one. I don't think so. The person who said the housing market was going to fail, no duh. If you have ever studied any economy in your life you notice there is an up and down and hmm we were in a bull market in the 90's so it would most likely stay until the 2000's and then what happens after any economic rise, a fall. This one just happened to be more drastic because of the policies instituted by Clinton in the 90's over a decline in the interest rates on loans. Also if you were buying a house in the 90's you could easily sell it in 97 for about 30 percent more than it was worth. it was only inevitable that the prices of homes would rise continuously. He is merely a statistics expert. He can predict what is going to happen in a broad spectrum but isn't he just like the Stock Market that tells you as a consumer what is worth more than something else. Make your own predictions about the future and stop listening to some negative nancy who has nothing better to do then say the world will end. He probably has a horrible life and wishes everyone else were as miserable as him. |

geniusiknowit User ID: 815953 United States 11/11/2009 12:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Somewhere around the year 2000, the revelation--and revolution--will come. The lawn! Lawns are everywhere: millions of costly, intensively cared for suburban lawns have been doing nothing but growing grass. But a lawn that's turned into a vegetable patch can produce fresh food." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG No, this is happening. [link to www.cnn.com] The only question is what did Celente mean by "somewhere around the year 2000?" Does 2008 count? "The videophone, meanwhile, will keep us in touch with faraway relatives. Today when we use the phone, we are still communicating by radio. With the addition of the videophone's visual dimension, long-distance communication will be more like television." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG Have you not heard of Skype? My company is using it. My dear ol' mother is using it. Everyone is using it apparently, except you. They will be staffed with medical doctors well versed in both state-of-the-art medicine and alternative therapies, as well as nutritionists, acupuncturists, herbalists, chiropractors, and a diverse group of physical, emotional, and spiritual therapists and healers." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG I had to look this one up. Such centers are out there and gaining popularity. Celente seems to have overstated how prevalent they'd be in the year 2000, but to call this 100% wrong is disingenuous. "Another key player will be the vitamin counselor. While vitamins have been available in supermarkets and health food stores for decades, it was only in the early 1990s that it became apparent that no two people have the same nutritional needs. Effective vitamin counseling must be individualized, just like effective medical advice; a person's age, lifestyle, profession, and eating habits must be taken into account. But most mainstream physicians have had little training in nutrition, and we can't expect knowledgeable advice from minimum-wage clerks at health food stores. Vitamin counselors, on the other hand, will be multidisciplinary practitioners; they'll have a solid grounding of medical knowledge but won't need four years of medical school. By the year 2000 they will be on their way to becoming as professionalized and as respected as pharmacists." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG I was going to agree that Celente was 100% wrong here. Then I realized he was talking about nutritionists. Again, not 100% wrong, but clearly an overstatement. Nutritionists are becoming more prevalent, but in 2009 they don't appear to be at the level he said they would be by the year 2000. "The return of individuality will spell an end to the multibillion-dollar fashion industry The bulk of day-to-day apparel will consist of durable mass-produced casual wear. Where appearance matters, the combination of computerization and declining wages will bring custom tailoring back to an affordable price range. The result--personally designed "smartwear"--will bridge the gap between casual and formal: appearance-enhancing but comfortable." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG Celente seems to contradict himself here, at least as it's quoted. Either clothing will be mass-produced, or it will be custom tailored? It seems he may have been wrong about that part. But, anyone who has been to a mall can tell he was right when he said "bridge the gap between casual and formal," although I don't recall when this fashion trend really started, and I don't follow fashion, it seems to me it has picked up since he wrote that. What I have noticed is more and more places are offering affordable tailoring, usually via their websites. Even Target is/was doing this for dress shirts and pants. Perhaps that is what he meant - I don't know. In Canada, demonstrations almost shut down the Toronto Stock Exchange--and Canadians never protest anything." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG You haven't been paying attention to what's been going on in France. You're also ignoring the WTO protests. Further riots occurred in Indonesia after Celente wrote that. You're ignoring all the anti-globalization riots that are strongly linked with labor issues. Economic riots in Argentina. Labor riots in China. Global May Day riots. Really man, get your head out of the sand. "Dr. Also, as the population ages and medical costs rise, profit-hungry HMOS won't want to pay for medical care for people whose lives are nearly over." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG No, he's quite correct about this. The court DID rule on assisted suicide that summer. A simple scan of news headlines on the subject since 1997 show the movement to permit assisted suicide has been growing. Assisted suicide is now legal in OR, MT, and WA. Bills have been and continue to be introduced in other states at a growing rate. And he's right about HMOs, although that may have been true by the time he wrote that. "The public is going to demand that the government break up powerful corporate monopolies. One industry that will almost certainly suffer the wrath of trust busters is health care. There are insurance companies that also own HMOs, hospitals, and drug manufacturers--the entire spectrum of medical services." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG He is ~95% wrong about this. There has been a significant, but minority outcry over the situation, but nothing has been done about it from a legal standpoint. "All in the Family. The flip side of the antimonopoly movement. Businesses that are family-owned and operated--or that at least give the impression of being mom-and-pop establishments--will thrive." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG He is wrong about this so far. Conspicuous consumption simply won't be an option for them." Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017100% WRONG 100% right about this, as is evidenced by the surprise popularity of Ron Paul among Generation Y. Support for both typical liberal and typical conservative ideologies have been diminished as support for Paul and people similar to him has increased. It's been easy to ignore it (as you've willfully ignored everything else), but that's getting harder to do now. Even the MSM is struggling to ignore it. The status quo has been challenged, the upheaval has begun, and the movement is being perpetuated mainly by Gen Y. So what do we have? WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG and WRONG. But it doesn't matter. Because Celente tells you the doom you want to hear, GLPers will continue to eat up the dung he spews. Quoting: TruthWillSetYouFree 684017What we have is a guy who doesn't bat 1000, but has still hit mostly home runs, especially on the major economic issues that affect us all. |

(due mostly to his age) 2) what is webcam communication, nothing more than a video phone to me, just differnt means of making it work. Lots of people use them even if its not everyone. i could go on.....point is all in due time and give the guy a brake, im sure you said some stuff in 97 that sounded good then that makes you sound like a dumb shit now when taken too litterally or when mis represented. |
