EAT LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE and BE HEALTHIER!
This is a really interesting article, and I have only pasted a few comments from it. The link is below, if you want to watch the video and read the entire article. AQ7

..........................................................
[link to articles.mercola.com]

Do You Really Know Where Your Food Comes From?

[excerpts from] Dr. Mercola's Comments:

If you want to get an in-depth overview of the many problems facing the American food system, simply watch the above video in its entirety. Michael Pollan has a knack for taking the complex, big-picture problems facing the entire food system and explaining them in simple, relatable bite-sized pieces. //...

It all boils down to this: It is very challenging to have a healthy population without a healthy diet, and you cannot have a healthy diet without a healthy agriculture system.

Unfortunately, as it stands the U.S. food system, including its agriculture and food processing, is chronically ill, using more fossil fuel and contributing more greenhouse gasses to the environment than any other industry -- and leaving the people it feeds struggling with health problems of epidemic proportions.

A Food System That Cannot be Sustained

Many years ago before industry took over agriculture, it took 1 calorie of fossil fuel energy to produce 2 calories of food energy.

One of the many astounding facts that Pollan revealed in the video is that it now takes 10 calories of fossil fuel energy to produce 1 calorie of food. And for certain foods, like the feedlot beef used at most fast food restaurants, it can take 55 fossil fuel calories to produce 1 calorie of food!

//...

The end result is cheap calories, and lots of them, but largely in the form of corn and soy, and loaded with chemical residues. This, in turn, is fueling a growing number of health epidemics, from obesity and type 2 diabetes to cancer and heart disease.

Quite simply, producing food on a massive scale at the lowest price possible has taken precedence over obeying natural laws.
//...

You Can Make a Difference!

//... So please do your health a favor and support the small family farms in your area. You’ll receive nutritious food from a source you can trust, and you’ll be supporting the honest work of a real family farm.

You’ll also be voting with your pocketbook and saying you prefer pure, locally grown food from a farm that respects the laws of nature and grows a diverse array of crops.

Now that summer is almost here in the United States, fresh produce and other foods are available in abundance. Not only is the food so much tastier and healthier, but there is something about shopping for fresh foods in an open-air, social environment that just feels right. ...

So please make a point to visit your local farmer’s markets and take part in community-supported agriculture programs. Here are some great resources to do just that -- to obtain wholesome food that supports not only you but also the environment:

1. Alternative Farming Systems Information Center, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

2. Farmers' Markets -- A national listing of farmers' markets.

3. Local Harvest -- This Web site will help you find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.

4. Eat Well Guide: Wholesome Food from Healthy Animals -- The Eat Well Guide is a free online directory of sustainably raised meat, poultry, dairy, and eggs from farms, stores, restaurants, inns, and hotels, and online outlets in the United States and Canada.

5. Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) -- CISA is dedicated to sustaining agriculture and promoting the products of small farms.

6. FoodRoutes -- The FoodRoutes “Find Good Food” map can help you connect with local farmers to find the freshest, tastiest food possible. On their interactive map, you can find a listing for local farmers, CSA's, and markets near you.

It's a coincidence for me that you posted this thread because I've been on a SLOWFOOD/local/organically grown food bonanza for the past few days. I switched my kids to raw milk (legal in Cali) and have actually been researching local Co-ops and farms all day to get pasture eggs, veggies, etc.

I think the government doesn't even need chemtrails to control the population (if that is what they are really using them for), they do a fine job of killing people with all the commercially produced chemical laden food.

I have three children who are my world and as a good mom, I want to protect them from ALL evil, so if I can at least feed them pure healthy food the way nature intended it to be, that is a great start.

Bump!!!

Please don't do that to your kids, they don't need the health problems when they grow up (20-30 yrs old)

Stick to the unrefined plant produce only.

Fruits veggetables green leafy food, nuts grains seeds (sprouted is best)

Hi Andromeda, and thanks for sharing your experience with this.

I live in a farm community, so we don't have a co-op per se, but we have several farmers' markets close by which I try to buy all my fruits and veggies from throughout the summer. Wonderful food with great taste -- and all grown within a short distance of where I live.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 686919

Why do you question many of their sources? Are they not local?

I don't have that problem with the local farmers' markets.
This is a small community, and I am acquainted with the various farmers who offer their produce for sale.
If I have a question about where the produce is from, I ask. It's generally grown right there on their farm ... and if not, then on a farm within 10 or 15 miles from them.

That sounds wonderful.

The food is MUCH better when it is fresh from a nearby farm.

I try eating regular veggies from the supermarket now, and a lot of it has a weird flabby texture and watery taste. And it goes bad so quickly in the refrigerator.

The co-op and organic foods last longer in the refrigerator and have real texture and taste!

Invest in locally grown foods that are organic, if possible. Paying a little more for items you can get locally will pay off in the future. Plus, you are reaping the benefits right now.

I've found that to be true, too.

I think the supermarket produce is picked too green; then shipped a long distance; then irradiated to "make it ripen"; then we get to eat the resulting mess. It's a wonder we're not all dead. :(

something fun to test out for ya.

A properly feed fruit plant will rpdocue fruit than can be picked ripe and left to sit in the open environment and will dry and not rot.

Also you can try setting unripe fruits in the sun and misting with water to finish their life cycle into a ripe fruit. (apples oranges lemons) stuff with a natural seal.
