Ha! A very good friend of mine dropped out of society in 1972, he was sure the end was nigh. You see, back then we had our fair share of doomsayers. Hell, the end of the world has come and gone countless times in my lifetime, the doom date arrives, nothing happens, and a new one springs up. My friend built himself a shelter in a secluded area, away from civilization. He learned how to live off the land, built a generator, always had a stockpile of food, water and supplies. He lived like that for more than 30 years. He never found a woman willing to live that lifestyle, so his only company were his dogs. He never had children. In 2008 he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within months. He worked hard, lived his life basically alone, and in the end, the world goes on and he died. The last time I talked to him, he voiced his regrets about living the best and last years of his life as a recluse, afraid of doomsday that never came, and now he was dying, after living a healthy lifestyle, only eating food he hunted, fished or grew himself, all organic. It turns out he was doomed to die of cancer, and that the outcome would have been the same had he stayed connected and allowed himself to enjoy some of the luxuries and amenities of the civilized world. He might have died with more than just a handful of people that will miss him now that he is gone. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. |
