It shows up on the infrared, but you'll only call that phony.

DrPostman,

Please show your evidence . . . I have to admit that I was puzzled by NASA's entire pre-event hype and the lack of obvious evidence of success. At least the type of success that would match the pre-event anticipation.

 Quoting: George B

Here is an image of the IR flash.

There should be no surprise that the event was less than spectactular in the optical spectrum since all astronomical web sites warned that imagers would have to keep the moon just off to the edge of the camera's field of view since the plume would be approximately magnitude 8 in brightness (the human eye can only see to mag 5, so it would take time exposures to see the magnitude 8 plume). With the NASA spacecraft camera aimed directly at the lit surface of the moon, it's no wonder at all that the plume wasn't visible in the images. The camera was set for a proper optical light exposure on the fully sunlit surface, so there was never any hope of seeing a magnitude 8 plume against that bright background. The news media just does not understand this stuff.
