Earthquakes on the Increase
This is not your imagination. More earthquakes than usual have struck so far in 2010 – and early in the year. In less than 7 months, yearly averages are already filling up.
2010 is statistically the highest year on record on earthquakes for all categories.

The number of magnitude 5.0 to 6.9 worldwide earthquakes is up 51 percent since the year 1900, as of May 25, 2010.
The data used in this analysis has been collected from the USGS (United States Geological Survey) going back to to the year 1900. The number of earthquakes since 1900 was averaged in each magnitude range, and also averaged was the same data over the last 10 years, then compared with the current earthquake statistics in 2010.

Earthquakes below magnitude 5.0 were not included in this analyzis because when it comes to detecting and recording relatively small earthquakes that generally cause little or no damage, in the past this required higher sensitivity and more advanced technology. Earthquakes above this level were fairly easy to detect, even a century ago.

Magnitude 5 – 5.9 up 39 % over the last 10 years
(up 63% since 1900).
Magnitude 6 – 6.9 up 30% over the last 10 years
(up 40% since 1900).

Skyrocketing number of Magnitude 7 Earthquakes in 2010
USGS statistics indicate that we have already exceeded the normal number of magnitude 7 – 7.9 earthquakes that the world sees in one year, and there is still four months to go.

Magnitude 7 – 7.9 earthquakes are up 81% so far in 2010 compared with the last 10 years (up 58% since 1900).

Magnitude 8 – 8.9 earthquakes have already reached the average (1 per year), and again, four months to go…

The USGS acknowledges that “The increase in the number of [seismic] stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years”.
This is true and logical, however in their words they confirm that this has allowed detection of smaller earthquakes, and the overall detection of earthquakes to be faster. Nowhere have they addressed the earthquakes range of magnitude 5.0 and above, as to why they have increased in frequency of late.

In September 2003 USGS adjusted (increased) global earthquake averages for magnitudes 4, 5, 6 and 7. This indicates an overall increase in earthquake activity.

Since the 1980s number of earthquakes has risen by around 50 percent.
