How could I when by some estimates, as much as one third of all "government" documents produced since the United States was founded are, and remain, CLASSIFIED. Almost no one disputes that the single largest repository of written knowledge on THE PLANET is the Vatican Library - and "who" has access to THAT??? Certainly not anyone I know personally. Heck - we can't even get the recipe for Coca-Cola!

The narrow trench, just wide enough to wedge yourself in, is actually a brilliantly simple idea that is easy to create in just an hour or two, and one that will provide an ample amount of protection against high winds, firestorms, and richtor 9 earthquakes.

By itself though, the protection is only partial. To increase the protective capacity, some cover is necessary. Now I said "link or it didn't happen" - and I was RIGHT. You used the word "moss" instead of the word "sod" which may mean the same thing in Australia or the UK, but in the United States where Nancy resides, and who she has stated was her target audience, "moss" and "sod" are VERY different. Moss is a distinct plant:

Mosses are small, soft plants that are typically 1–10 cm (0.4–4 in) tall, though some species are much larger. They commonly grow close together in clumps or mats in damp or shady locations. They do not have flowers or seeds, and their simple leaves cover the thin wiry stems. At certain times mosses produce spore capsules which may appear as beak-like capsules borne aloft on thin stalks.

Sod on the other hand, is surface grass, PLUS a good deal of topsoil - at least two to three inches thick:

Sod or turf is grass and the part of the soil beneath it held together by the roots, or a piece of thin material.

The term sod may be used to mean turf grown and cut specifically for the establishment of lawns.

Sod - even one layer will increase the protective qualities of the trench by a VERY significant factor. It will provide some radiation insulation, as well as heat and fire protection due to its moisture content.

But for complete protection against gamma radiation from the sun, as well as intense firestorms, a minimum of THREE FEET would be necessary. It would be a LOT of work to build this with only hand tools, but it's do-able.

Of course you would need something to support the "sod" - such as a sheet of plywood, or doors, a large tabletop, etc. Even box springs would work in a pinch.

As far as the "sheet metal" goes, she was actually referring to a CAR HOOD - which being held on with only four bolts, is ideal as a cover in an emergency, and when time IS NOT AVAILABLE. She offered this suggestion for those caught in the open with maybe only minutes to find or create some form of protection. Someone who has a wrench can even assist other motorists to use their hood as well. And yes, if there was NO TIME to cover the hood with dirt, there would be no choice but to literally hold on to it - but not so tightly that if the wind got underneath, that you allow it make you a "passenger". yes, it is a FAR from ideal form of protection, but its BETTER THAN NOTHING.

Do you have a BETTER suggestion if caught out in the open with no other protection available? The only preparation needed is a cresent wrench - which one can get for about twenty dollars at any hardware store and throw in the glove box or trunk.
