You could show Max a thousand blog and forum links where amateurs are following the comet with interest and where nobody is saying there is anything remarkable about this comet, but Max will manage to find a youtube video or an "article" on some woo woo site by an anonymous person with no provable credentials that says the contrary and he will choose that one to believe because it resonates with his own preconceptions. Max doesn't care about truth. He is unable to let go of what he thinks or hopes is true to see what really is true. He just can't bear the thought that he may be wrong, that Nancy, Clif, and every other charlatan he subscribes to is yanking his chain for profit and fame.

Who's "screaming". Being an amateur astronomer active in several clubs and subscribing to all the magazines, I've seen very little about it. It's just another of the dozens of comets that can be observed each year.

You're suggesting the "collage" of conspiracy theories is itself a "conspiracy"??? Or are you trying to suggest that the wide-ranging genre of conspiracy theories generates its own kind of supra "urban legend" reality that in a feedback loop kind-of-way lends illegitimate "validity" to the notion of "conspiracy theory"?

I'm really trying to figure out why people are so freaked out by this comet. Comets have come through the solar system on an almost regular schedule. I guess these people still have dominant Neanderthal genes thinking that comets are harbingers of doom. They probably still throw rocks towards the moon whenever they see it.

If people don't understand what it is, they get freaked out. They think that because of it's close approach C/2010 X1 is going to cause havoc. However, there have been comets in the recent past that have come closer to the Earth.

And it sounds like it may not even be visible by the naked eye. Nothing spectacular at all about it.
