Storm Spanks Memphis: 130,000 Won't Have Power For A Week

MEMPHIS, TN – MLGW officials say it will take at least a week to restore power to the more than 130,000 people sitting in the dark.

Seventy-six power circuits were damaged by a severe storm that rolled across the Mississippi River, knocking down trees and power lines, Friday evening, June 12, 2009.

According to MLGW spokesperson Chris Stanley, five crews are on their way from Chattanooga to help restore power in the Memphis area. MLGW has requested an additional 25 crews.

Officials say it will take at least a week to restore everybody’s power and are asking people to be patient.

An Entergy spokesperson says at least 20,000 customers are without power in DeSoto County, Mississippi. The spokesperson says it could be Monday before power is back on in that area.

Arkansas also has a number of outages. In Crittenden County, more than 3,900 people are waiting for their power to be restored.

I was wondering about Tessa- y'all were lucky. This one went south of us here in Nashville, dodged a bullet. Did it ruin your corn Chawlee?? I hope not! It's gonna be miserable for the peeps in Memphis, so hot and humid. Hope it is just uncomfortable and not dangerous. Hey, Angel! Y'all have a great weekend!

I was driving south out of downtown Memphis on I-55 when it hit. Those winds had me all over the road down by President's Island. Southaven lost a few trees and limbs but it was nothing like that last tornado that ripped up warehouses right off of Stateline Rd and continued over to East Memphis and raised hell over there. That I know of, Southaven never lost power.

Another storm came through Memphis last night and knocked out power to an additional 10000 people. There was at least one area of town I know of yesterday morning lost power with no storms going on at all. It is a mess here in Memphis right now still.

Southaven did indeed lose power. It went down in my neighborhood (Pinehurst) at around 5:30 PM on Friday, and came back up around 7 PM on Sunday. Sucked.

I lost power here in the Arkansas River Valley @ 2 pm on Friday and got power restored @ 12:30 pm on Sunday Afternoon.

My Generator really came in handy, but I am going to look for a quieter diesel setup, that gasoline backup is extremely loud and guzzles the fuel.

I've got a date with the chainsaw tomorrow.
A couple of the Bradford pears lost pretty big limbs.
We had tornado sirens going for a while, but I still have a roof.
I haven't checked the garden yet. Fingers crossed.
