Malaysian jumping corpses

We are big fans of Jiang Shi, the Chinese hopping vampires, so I was disappointed to discover I missed a related story from Malaysia. Now, thanks to the latest issue of the Fortean Times to point me in the right direction, we can ready that terrible error.

Hantu is the Malaysian for "ghost" and there are quiet a few of them, some of them awfully specific (like hantu jepun, headless ghosts of Japanese soldiers). One of these is the hantu pocong, a hopping ghost, a body that has been left tied into its shroud which jumps out of its grave and hops around looking for someone to untie them. The reports that surfaced a few months back involved an outbreak of fear that they were roaming the river banks, although quite what was going on seems unclear (have some corpses washed out of a burial ground?):

Pandemonium broke out in a traditional village in Kota Tinggi, Johor, when five bundles believed to be hantu pocong (jumping corpses) were found along the Sungai Johor river bank, reported Kosmo!

In the front page report, two friends Mohd Izzudin Abd Karim, 18, and Mohd Razif Ismail, 17, from Kampung Tembioh were shocked when a bundle appeared out of nowhere and “hit” their legs while they were fishing at the river bank on Friday.

The two were stunned when they smelled kapur barus (camphor) and frangipani and quickly ran away from the spot.

Four other bundles were sighted later that night not too far away from the river bank.

Mohd Izzudin said the bundles looked like corpses covered with white cloth.

“The hantu pocong were of different sizes giving the impression of a family of two adults and three children,” he said.

A villager Meran Nor Hamil, 24, picked up the courage to open one of the bundles.

He said there was a black plastic with unknown content on top of the bundle and in the middle was a stone similar to a tombstone wrapped in cotton that smelt of camphor.
