Over 9000 Vials of a potentially harmful pathogen have gone missing at Fort Detrick, the Army’s main biodefense lab. But don’t freak out. The Army has found “no evidence yet of criminal misconduct,” the Washington Post reports. The institute has been under scrutiny since the Justice Department’s 2008 assertion that a former USAMRIID researcher was responsible for the 2001 anthrax mailings that killed five people. The prime suspect, microbiologist Bruce Ivins, committed suicide last July as federal prosecutors prepared charges against him. Federal investigators traced the anthrax strain in the mailings to a supply developed at the laboratory. Ivins stored his own sample of the agent in a refrigerator that he alone used.

They are not MISSING, they were unaccounted for. That is a big, big difference. They found 9,220 more samples than the database at Derrick held. They simply updated their database with the new samples and promised more audits from now on.

They only scary in all this is the fact that some samples that were not accounted for could have been removed from the site by insiders without notice and secondly, Fort Derrick was determined the origin of the Anthrax attackes in 2001 (remember?)
