Question For Canadians: Rental Stuff
Ok, so here's the rundown of what's going on:
On December 23, I got a rental increase notice saying that my rent would be going from 540 - 740/mo, starting in February.

I spoke to the rentalsman, and they told me that the new laws said it had to be six months notice. Also told me that the notice has to be either hand delivered (literally handed to you) or officially mailed. Mine was shoved under my door.

Now here we are, and I'm being told that the increase takes effect on July 1st, from my landlord, the property owner, and the rentalsman.

Only thing is, is that it's only MY rent that's going up. Out of 24 apartments spread over 2 buildings. I've spoken to numerous other tenants and no one else has received an increase notice.

The rentalsman has gone back on what they told me at Christmas time. I'm being targeted because I complained to the landlord about her crazy daughter who was terrorizing and trashing this building (i was the only one who said anything to her about her crackhead daughter trashing the building).

My question is, has anyone else ever dealt with this type of shit, and if so, what do i do to fight it?

Re: Question For Canadians: Rental Stuff
well i'm giving the rentalsman another crack today, hoping they'll smarten up. I guess next step is the media, MLA's, etc... Anyone got any better ideas? (moving is out of the option, we have a 0.01 vacancy rate here).

I am sorry to tell you that Saskatchewan is one of the few provinces that does not have rent controls. As long as the form was served 6 months in advance (which in the case may be contestable) the bastard can raise it as much as he wants.

It sounds like he is intentionally trying to drive you out.

Muscle up on the legislation. Use it. Don't back down. Its working for me so far. A landlord has more legal obligations than rights.
Blackadder: Baldrick, how did you manage to find a turnip that cost £400 000?
Baldrick: Well, I had to haggle.

A tenant rights org is non govt, and is specifically on your side as a tenant. You might want to check them out...

Re: Question For Canadians: Rental Stuff
fuck i just found this:

"The security deposit provision is a change from the current rule where the landlord typically has a week to return the money or file notice that there's a dispute. Under amendments to the Residential Tenanices Act that went into effect June 1, landlords now have 120 days"

[link to www.cbc.ca]

That's bullshit. They can keep your DD for 1/3 of a year after you move out. I guess they figure there are lots of stupid people out there who will forget or just not care after 4 months of not getting your dd back.

That really fucks people over who need their dd when moving to pay the dd at the new place.

Fucking government. Fuck em all!

But if this is indeed the case, you are being targeted, and you should look up your Tenants Rights booklet in your area. You can usually find it at your local library, or on the internet. At least Californias can be found in both places....

Re: Question For Canadians: Rental Stuff
well that does it. The rentalsman will not help me, they are going against their own regulations and legislation and telling me I have to pay more than everyone else, for no reason at all.

They DID tell me I could go and file a claim against the landlord, BUT it won't go to a hearing for at least 2 months, meaning I have to pay the increase until the hearing, then if i win i get the money back, BUT they probably have 120 days to pay me back after the hearing.

I'm so fucking sick of being targeted by the government. I paid into EI for over 15 years straight, then when i needed it, they basically told me to fuck off. Can't collect social assistance. I've got the fucking commie's from Stats Canada coming to my door and telling me that if I don't answer all their questions I go to jail. They call it the Workforce Survey, I call it communism.

Fucking government. Goddamn sick of this shit!FUCK!
