Maybe his wife knew more than she let on about where he was, but didn't know how to respond when asked because she never expected to be asked. She didn't report him missing, so didn't have a plan in place. She had to have a plan in place for phone calls, or questions by family and friends so stuck with a simple answer that would satisfy them.
