I've decided to get involved in an open-source programming project to do something professionally useful, but I'm deciding what kind of open-source project to get into! I don't want to spend a lot of time working on a desktop stock-trading and market tracking program, if there won't be any real use for that on my resume.

I'm thinking the following tech areas would be good to get familiar with via participating in an open-source project:

-- Medical systems, including sensors and imaging
-- Computer mobility technologies -- mobile computing platforms
-- Databases, databases, databases
-- Computer network security/hacking
-- Modeling and simulation of energy systems
-- Low-bandwith networked gaming

What Tech jobs do you think will be hot in the coming decade?

Does anyone have suggestions for a good open-source project?
