Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun

except that now, they are able to make SOUND travel faster than light. some people..... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 629459
Except that they're not. They're able to set up a sound wave whose phase velocity is greater than the speed of light. That doesn't mean that sound is travelling faster than light: the information, the energy, the, you know - actual sound - is conveyed by the group velocity, which remains steadfastly subluminal. |

There is no object approaching the Sun travelling faster than the speed of light.
hope that clarifies it a little bit
Well no shit sherlock holmes.
It does not help me wrap my mind around the fact that
someone believed that 195,000 MPH was faster than 300,000 KPS. WOW Quoting: bbb
JEEZUS CHRIST! i have to leave this site now.
i was helping clarify for the person who didn't understand the speed of light. i used YOUR quote as a reference to help clarify it for HIM. the guy who doesn't understand that just because we understand that something can travel faster than light, doesn't mean that there is a "new lightspeed." in the general sense of lightspeed being the fastest known velocity, then perhaps, but light still travels the same speed and is sound that has now been proven to move faster. you actually made sense at first, which is why i quoted you. GLP you are too turbulent for me...enemies on all sides no matter what you say |

Oi. Planet X debunker right here, thank you very much.
But so far as I've seen nobody's seriously claiming that it's Planet X. So far the only specific claim I've seen anybody make is that it's Mercury, and it's been an interesting astronomical exercise to try to determine whether that's likely to be the case. |

Does anyone have any links to reputable stories/ info on this? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 323774
I've been searching, and I can't find anything. I am not doubting that there is something there, but it's always nice to be able to quote multiple sources. I am scouring through science news forums, see if I can find anyone else discussing this.
This is MAJOR if true. |

Nah, it's just a lot of fuss over a poorly written article by clueless journalist. Had a couple of threads on it yesterday. Newspapers never bother to employ anybody who understands physics, so every time a story like this comes up you get garbled nonsense, usually illustrated with a picture of the Starship Enterprise.
The blogger here is clearly suspicious, and he's right to be. The actual scientific paper was talking about generating a faster than light current by tracking a beam of particles around - in the same way you could track the illuminated dot a laser makes on the moon faster than light - and then using that superluminal current to generate a novel beamed radio transmission. Still useful and interesting, but nothing in it involves radio waves travelling faster than the speed of light. |

however..
if this objext increses speed it is pretty close to the sun and thats when you have a better chance at it hitting anything.
give it another 10 hours and we will know much better if it will hit anything...
can someone make another time lapsed video of the object with then 2 new images that have been posted?!?!?! |

Nooby question here
How does this brown dwarf Hellion come to be travelling at 195,357.21 MPH in the first place?
wouldent this be faster than the speed of light? ._.
speed of light is 300,000KPS (kilometers per second)
Simply, yes, it would be faster than the traditional speed of light. You will have to do a little Google to pick up on the new speed-of-light theories and information - yes, from scientists. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 714917
NO IT WOULD NTO BE FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT...

Planet sized unknown object is quickly approaching the Sun. The object in question can clearly be seen in the Stereo Behind COR 2 imagery . At this time the course of this object will pass dangerously close to or will actually hit the Sun around the equator . This is not a charted object and is not a planet .
