This one is actually plausible. However, if this is the case do you think our ET friends will help? Quoting: Stephen 704343
well at least we will know soon enough. And we can see it happening doom or not Astronomy is always fun |

Wouldn't the sun vaporize this object before it even hit? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59883
its the size of a large planet. bigger than earth apparently. so no, it would go through the sun like a bullet through a watermellon according to that guy.

thats the thread. its extrapolation but its the same science principles behind the two threads and there was discussion that on there as well. |

Looks like it'll be a direct hit. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 532628
Unless the object is 50,000 miles back behind the sun, and then it would pass harmlessly behind the sun. |

no those are direct feed images from nasa. well unless they are doing the photo editing.
but there is the possible and plausible explanation that it may be mercury. we will know once it gets closer. |

Same apology. Good find, NiS.
See the animation of the orbits [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
and that the planets are orbiting counterclockwise.
From the viewpoint of "B", the "behind" satellite, Mercury is just moving from left to right into view.
The object is Mercury. It will move behind the sun (from the viewpoint of "B" and re-appear on the other side still moving left to right in a few days.
This probably happens every 4 months or so (in this direction). And in the other direction every 4 months or so (in between) as Mercury moves in front of the sun.
Doom averted by orbiting inner planet. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 708452 7/1/2009 6:48 PM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | but we can consider the possibility of it happening and think of ways of how we could prepare.
there must be a way to predict somehow the extent of the damage that earth would suffer. how much protection one would need. would a wall be enough, cover up windows, etc or would you need several feet of concrete or rock? how long would the effects last? would it be a brief instant nuke of the earth's surface or would the sun continue to produce excessive radiation for many years to come? what would be the effects of a sun "shrapnel" passing near earth? evaporation of oceans scenarios?
i mean its good doom, we can do lots of speculation :) |

Rough guess says its moving (on vidio scale) about 8 hours per inch. Its got 4 inches to go. Thats less than 24 hours to impact.

which means it will be around 1 AM. perfect. :) thanks hehe |

The corona ('atmosphere' of the sun) is a million god damned degrees kelvin. Anything that approaches it will be destroyed. And even if a giant rock hit the surface of the sun, who fucking cares? It's a ball of plasma, it will absorb it and not care. Jesus fucking Christ. |
