Moncrieffe User ID: 538386 7/2/2009 9:14 AM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | Got another email from Mr. Gurman from NASA. Also, it seems we aren't alone at GLP in wondering what this is, apparently (from the string of replies in his response, not shown because of lack of relevance), a LOT of people sent them emails yesterday asking about it.
"
Joe Davila is undoubtedly correct. We have been having some
issues with the Website this week, so I wasn't able to find the "Where is [are?] STEREO?" page at its old URL. If you check that page you see that Mercury is indeed within the few degrees of the Sun field of view of COR2, but Venus is too far away. COR2 has field of view that shows up to 7.5 degrees from the Sun (2 to 15 solar radii).
Sorry for the misdirection,
Joe Gurman

Mine is that we are repeating the past until we get the outcome right which maybe never - sorta like a rubiks cube but with many many more variables - many depending on our influence on others ... as it has been it will be |

The July 6 date that people keep posting on here is for the SOHO spacecraft, not STEREO. I haven't seen any official dates for STEREO. |

Not necessarily. The guy you first emailed was probably a web server admin, responsible for keeping that page updated. No reason he should know immediately what's coming into view. So you got a guess that it might be Venus, but he copied in someone who might know more astronomy.
Remember, NASA's a huge organisation. The guys who'd just know off the top of their head where Mercury was are over on the Mercury Messenger project. These guys we've had emails from here would know their stuff about coronal physics and the solar wind, but just like the rest of us, if they wanted to know where Venus and Mercury were relative to STEREO-B, they'd have to go away and look it up.
There's an add-on file for Celestia here which allows you to simulate views from both STEREO spacecraft for yourself. However, both spacecraft are drifting and since the orbital elements are a few months old you'll need to update the figures. The author gives a link to the source, but apparently working out how it's done is an exercise for the reader...

Anonymous Coward User ID: 660262 7/2/2009 11:41 AM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | OK, I've got STEREO-B's orbit updated and loaded into Celestia, and I'm running some simulations.
Mercury's pretty much spot on where we see it here. Running time forward, it moves right to left and passes behind the Sun.
Going forward further, Venus and Mars move in from the right, while Mercury finishes orbiting out to the far left and comes back inwards. Now I don't know exactly how valid forecasts are this far out, since STEREO-B's orbit is drifting continually, but it looks like all three planets will be very near the Sun as seen from STEREO-B on the 10th of August. Keep an eye out for it.

Save it as STEREO.ssc and copy it into /usr/share/celestia/extras, or whatever the equivalent location is on your distribution.
Oh, and I need to try to find that rosetta.3ds file. Even though it's presumably a model of Rosetta and not STEREO, it would be nice to have _something_ there where the spacecraft's supposed to be :-)

Bugger all, of course. But it's bloody difficult to get a view of Mercury from the Earth - it's usually so close to the Sun that it's lost in the glare at sunset or sunrise - so it's nice to be able to track the tricky little bugger from a different vantage point for once. |
