The STEREO coronagraphs are designed to look at the faint solar corona. Planets, on the other hand, are very bright and tend to saturate in the detectors. Because of this, they generally end up looking much larger than they really are, and are often surrounded by lens flare effects. This is particularly true for COR2, which is much more sensitive than COR1. In the even more sensitive Heliospheric Imager telescopes, the planets images tend to bleed along the CCD channels, forming vertical streaks.

should be pinned until we find out what it is.
it's not Iran or NK but it's probably *more* interesting

i do not think it's mercury. mercury is way too small. look at this size comparison of planets compared to the sun:

are you sure connection "ftp" instead of "http"?
i've tried also the "http" prefix, but it didn't work either.
All SOHO servers are down, lol!! |

Your second link exhibits a good photo of the "object". I have watched Mercury orbit past the sun in SOHO shots many times. This does NOT look like Mercury or Venus. If I am wrong, it would be because these STEREO photos do not reflect the horizontal shine values of planets seen in SOHO pics.
This object looks odd. It does not look like a planet reflecting the rays of the sun. |

why no NASA links to the photos are working?
those guys are playing games with us... again?
I believe the speed of the object has not changed from what we observed yesterday, in this case it would be *slower* than Mercury is expected to be. I'll double check and come back. |

OK, I've got STEREO-B's orbit updated and loaded into Celestia, and I'm running some simulations.
Mercury's pretty much spot on where we see it here. Running time forward, it moves right to left and passes behind the Sun.
Going forward further, Venus and Mars move in from the right, while Mercury finishes orbiting out to the far left and comes back inwards. Now I don't know exactly how valid forecasts are this far out, since STEREO-B's orbit is drifting continually, but it looks like all three planets will be very near the Sun as seen from STEREO-B on the 10th of August. Keep an eye out for it.
I'll post a couple of pics:

Thanks for the effort, I thought it would most likely be Mercury, but good to have confirmation.
Much appreciated |

Ok from my understanding not only would the President go underground but lawyers, doctors, scientists etc, you get the picture...Surely we would notice if that activity was taking place and I highly doubt if they could accomplish all that quickly |

Are we going to know or pay attention when everyone goes away for their holiday weekend?
I'm not saying this is the end, I have no idea. But I do believe that when/if that time comes and they are going underground that they probably have plans in place so they don't arouse any suspicion. Biden recently talked about the hideyhole under the VP house. Like they aren't all over the place? |

hey thanks!

The STEREO Science Center website went offline on June 22, 2009. Currently, we're running a minimal website with some, but not all, of the functionality of the original website. Please excuse us while we try to address the problem.
