Maybe it is but not towards the sun? Maybe it is moving away or towards Earth making it look like it's stationary? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 716601 7/2/2009 3:51 PM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | I've made some quick measurements on the pics of yesterday and those of today that Ostria posted, up to 14:38 and got the following results
The total diameter of the greater red circle in my computer screen is 79 "units" (approx. 119 mm). the movement is right to left, which implies that the "position" units decrease as the object moves.
from 9:38 to 21:38 the object moved from position 79 to 73
==> 6 positions in 12 hours, therefore with approximate speed
approx. V1 = 0.5 posit/hour
from 21:38hs(jul/01) to 10:08hs(jul/02) it moved from 73 to 67-68
==> another 6 positions in 12 hours, then
approx. V2 ~ 0.5 posit/hour (possibly a little less)
from 10:08(jul/02) to 14:38(jul/02) it moved from position 67-68 to 65-66
==> approx 2 positions in 4 hours,
approx. V2 ~ 0.5 posit/hour (possibly a little less)
Therefore the speed seems approximately constant along the various pictures and if it continues with the present rate it would take approximately
Total-distance/speed = 79 positions/(0.5 positions-per-hour) = 158 hours ~ 6 days and 14 hs
to cross the entire image.
If Mercury is expected to go faster, it cannot be Mercury. |

I would think that if this thing was something other then a planet that the President would be getting his stuff together and heading to his underground bunker...So the logic that we are in imminent danger doesn't set right..I'm not denying that theres something there I just don't think we are in danger Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716641
Do you think he'll announce it if he goes to a bunker????? |

So did we crash Stereo site or it crashed by itself?
StatusBoth STEREO spacecraft are currently performing as expected and taking science data on a regular basis.
The STEREO Science Center website is currently down. We hope to have up and operating again in a few days. In the meantime, the alternate anonymous ftp server is available at stereoftp.nascom.nasa.gov.
[ link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
I doubt it's the traffic. It's not as if there are THAT many of us poking at it. Hopefully they're updating that location finder, it hadn't changed in a few days.
You can get today's imaging from STEREO-B here:
ftp://stereoftp.nascom.nasa.gov/pub/browse/2009/07/02/behind/cor2/1024/
No I cant get in this url... have you tried it? Quoting: Ostria
Thanks Ostria, it worked fine for me.
I've picked all pictures from jul/01 and 02.
What I did was to first connect to "ftp://stereoftp.nascom.nasa.gov", then type "anonymous" as user name and "my-e-mail" as password and the "cd" to "pub/browse/2009/07/02/behind/cor2/1024".
Is everything there, thanks!:-)

Holy crap!!!
I think it's really time to get answers from serious astronomers!!!
I took a look at today's piuctures and especially this one caught my attention:
> [ link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
Zoom in on that object and compare it to this on:
> [ link to images.google.de]
It's an image of ERIS!!!
Please somebody tell me that i'm totally wrong, this must not be true!!!
Following todays Pictures it looks like this Object is orbited by another Object...
> [ link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
This could very well be Dysnomia, the Moon which surrounds Eris?!

fact is eiter this object is very big or he is close to the SOHO ence far from the sun.
i do not think it's mercury. mercury is way too small. look at this size comparison of planets compared to the sun:
[ link to img101.imageshack.us] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 508527
This is a point light source at this magnification and distance; the apparent size in the image tells you absolutely nothing about the planet's true size, it only tells you how bright it is in the image. |

 | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | well whatever it is, how do you know from a flat picture it is headed for the sun? I have not read all the pages here on this thread, but the reason it doesn't show on Lasco is because it shows on Stereo Behind. Different viewpoint. It does seem "closer" that the other day. It could be a star ship you know, they are posing for the cameras a lot more lately.

 | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | Thank you all for your hard work!

In maya2012's video the object seems to slow down a bit in the last hours but AC 716601's calculations show that the speed is constant. I wonder when it will show up in Soho's images.
Oh really I dont know, I m a bit confused lol
I wish we could find some earlier Stereo images or videos from Mercury passing by. |
