Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

Where it IS proven that it is Mercury?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716809

Good question.

I believe the most one can say at this point is that it "looks like it could be Mercury", all the arguments about the relative position of the satellites and supposed speed of Mercury through the pictures are essentially speculative as there is no exact proof, for example that the position of the object in comparison with Mercury's is the expected one. No one here really seems to know this.

If you look at the images, the form of the object is varying all the time, from picture to picture, and all other videos I've seen of planets in these SOHO and STEREO-AB images they pretty much keep their circular-like shape with little variation.

Also I've not seen a good argument that the transit of Mercury should be expected before July 6th, just because no one has given yet the exact position of Mercury with respect to the Sun in those images.

Then, I believe the OP was more reasonable.

While he didn't conclude too much to the point of alarming people or promoting doom, he just posted his *observation* and I believe he's now waiting to see what happens.

I mean, if the object hits the Sun or not.

Too bad the OP didn't come back.

mercury has the most unusual orbit in our solar system. einstein and newton even cant figure it out why it orbits like it does. right now the core of mercury has cooled and maybe its orbit is off? just sayin....

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 715743

I agree, Mercury's orbit has some additional precession (if I remember correctly) probably because it's too close to the Sun and it's also so small.

Well, who said that Mercury could not fall on the Sun someday?

Maybe it's orbit is also unstable and we're just seeing an incredible event happen before our (satellite's) very eyes...
the collapse of one of the planets of the solar system.

Well... I hope I'm wrong...

Where it IS proven that it is Mercury?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716809

Nowhere yet. I'm the one who emailed the NASA guy, and even they only think they know what it was.

Excerpts:

From one guy:

"My guess, from the current positions of the planets is that it's Venus"

From his colleague:

"I think it looks more like Mercury in the FOV. Venus would be
further out in the field of view of COR2-B. "

These are excerpts from an email I posted a few pages back. I don't think these guys are certain either.

I plan on remaining as objective as possible. I consider that it could be either option, and frankly, we just won't know until we do.

If this is suppose to be a major event (a negative one or something unusual that will happen regarding this unknown 'object') why it is not in the media? I mean, it's a matter of a few days and it's nowhere yet in the media except a couple of threads on the internet.

Does this mean there's nothing to worry about?

There is nothing to worry about. This is a discussion of celestial objects seen on SOHO and STEREO satellite pictures. That's all it is.

It's as plain as the nose on your face on the sterio but appears nowhere on either lasco 2 or 3!

Thanks Moncrieffe, a straight logic as yours is the best answer we have for those who think they call fool us.

They can't, at least not for long.

We're showing to *them* that we can look at the skies and discover by ourselves if something is Mercury or not.

Things are happening in the entire solar system right now and they won't have a single "straight" word as to what it could be, a direct answer for our questions.

Therefore we *need* to find them by ourselves.

And I believe the Sun brings the best set of clues for the coming events.

How much did the media talk about comet C/2009 G1 (STEREO),

[link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov]

What the OP is saying is that the object in those pictures is an analogous celestial body that could possibly hit the Sun.

Nothing more, nothing less.

The consequences we'll see in a few days, *if* it hits the Sun,

and even so we'll probably have to draw the conclusions by ourselves because, even if it hits, the media will always say only what it's permitted to say which is usually very different from the truth.

Yes, and "changing appearance" (I'd not say (yet) "changing form" because it could be an artifact of the observation, some kind of luminous effect) while the "usual planets" have a more stable "appearance" that changes very little during the time they transit through the satellite pictures.

Again, I could be wrong, but we're all learning here, right?:-)
