The guy listed as the contact on the STEREO website answered an email asking what the object was, and said he thought it was probably Venus, but copied in some colleagues who he thought would know more. They later got back to him saying it was more likely Mercury, since Venus would be out of shot at the moment, and he forwarded their opinion on too. The emails are somewhere _way_ back in this thread.
So, not quite an official statement, but consensus among NASA contacts is that it's probably Mercury. Surprising degree of uncertainty. |

It's DEFINITELY Mercury. Stereo consists of TWO spacecraft, both of which orbit the sun in what is more or less the earth's orbit, but 1 called "A" or AHEAD is ahead of the earth, and one "B" or BEHIND is behind the Earth. You'll notice that the B spacecraft is the one the object appears in.
Well, a small amount of research will show you this picture, which shows exactly where A, B, Earth, Sun, and Mercury are right now:
[ link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
Yes, from teh point of view of B, mercury is travelling from right to left, and is currently on the right side of the sun..... so, yes,
ITS MERCURY!!!!!!!!!
To prove it another way, look at this orbit simulator:
[ link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov]
ITS MERCURY!
[/quot
Good point of view. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 395805
Just checked the simulation...
The sun images are taken from the earth, so in the java sim. you have to turn everything around, so it shows the Earth in the front, the Sun in the middle and Mercury in the background, but then, Mercury moves from left to right... so it can't be it.
Can anyone else double check ?? |

North Korea poised to conduct either an ICBM test or nuclear test, or both. 8am - July 4th Pyongyang time would be around 6pm tonight in the US. If it's an ICBM and moves towards Hawaii then what happens if the military tries or does bring it down?
Now what do you think the MSM would cover? An unheard-of, unspoken solar impact, or a North Korean test and possible incident.
If a "war" broke out then the country's leaders would certainly be ushered out to "secure" locations.. deep underground.
If a solar impact occurred then when would Earth take thr brunt of its effects? Approximately 2-3 days later.. around July 7th?
Now, even though it's a funny coincidence, all you movie monsters know that Tuesday is DVD release day. Oddly enough, this Tuesday, July 7th the movie Knowing is released on DVD. Knowing was a movie about what again? |

I have also looked at the orbital diagrams of Mercury as seen by Sterio B (Behind) and although it's in aproximately the right position, it would be actually travelling away from the camera, getting fainter and not be anywhere NEAR the size it appears to be!
I guess we'll know for sure soon enough. |

It's moving away from the camera, but not much; most of its motion is right-to-left as it orbits counter-clockwise. Consistent with its observed path.
The apparent size is misleading. Remember this is a camera designed for studying the very faint light from coronal mass ejections - like that plasma surge observed this morning. On that scale, Mercury is a very, very bright object. It dazzles the detector, and overspills onto pixels where by rights it shouldn't be; this is why we have the flickering effect which makes Mercury appear to change shape.
This overspill effect is also why there's a sun-shade blacking out the centre of the image. If that weren't there, the Sun would be visible in shot - and given such a sensitive camera, the entire image would be whited out. |

For that large ball of light to be Mercury (I hope that is) the camera locations would have to be as close to Mercury as the Moon is to Earth or similar. That thing just seems too large. Until NASA proves it is Mercury somehow, we do not know what the hell that is. |
