Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun

Anonymous Coward User ID: 688092 7/3/2009 10:56 AM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | I have a Physics degree. And let me tell all those who think this is Mercury are completely out of their minds.
First of all, this object is huge; and seems to be the size of Earth if not larger.
Secondly, if you see the "animation" of this moving towards the sun, you would realize that this object has so far been moving with constant velocity. If it was Mercury it should have immediately changed speed (observable difference) as soon as it moved "around" the Sun. In fact, even if you calculate the speed of this object and estimate the time it would take to move to the other extreme of the orbit (that is on the left of the Sun), you would realize that this object is moving much faster and doesn't seem to correlate with the Time Period of Mercury's revolution around the Sun.
Thirdly, if you observe the object closely you would see its luminosity being erratic and it has a kind of "aura" (of light) around it that constantly keeps on change around it. This can't be Mercury.
This can't be a Planet. |

i got to mention this lucid dream i had maybe 6-7 yrs ago..it all happened so quick. i was outside staring at what seemed the moon, there was somebody next to me but cannot recollect who it was, anyway i remember saying to myself " the moon seems very large today " and as i said that another object came into view which was the same shape and size as the moon right next to the moon and it zoomed in towards me within a split second then i awoke..i never forgot that dream vivid as though it was an event.. not trying to scaremonger just passing on what maybe a future event or a previous life experience.. i dont know ..also i remember being in an underground facility in another dream around 30 yrs ago trying to escape to normality . i remember there were guards at every corner of the roads with suits and masks, i tried to climb out over the gate , but i could only view the chimneys and partial buildings. i remember my parents being in the facility ,and i cried for them to be released but to no avail.Just dreams i guess Quoting: Anonymous Coward 715777

Then why is it in EXACTLY the right position to be Mercury? |
|
Anonymous Coward User ID: 705842 7/3/2009 11:04 AM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote |
although it's in aproximately the right position, it would be actually travelling away from the camera, getting fainter and not be anywhere NEAR the size it appears to be!
It's moving away from the camera, but not much; most of its motion is right-to-left as it orbits counter-clockwise. Consistent with its observed path.
The apparent size is misleading. Remember this is a camera designed for studying the very faint light from coronal mass ejections - like that plasma surge observed this morning. On that scale, Mercury is a very, very bright object. It dazzles the detector, and overspills onto pixels where by rights it shouldn't be; this is why we have the flickering effect which makes Mercury appear to change shape.
This overspill effect is also why there's a sun-shade blacking out the centre of the image. If that weren't there, the Sun would be visible in shot - and given such a sensitive camera, the entire image would be whited out.
Ok, now that sounds logical! So if this is correct, then we should see it appear soon in the in the ahead camera, right? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716143
Once Mercury passes the sun, then yes, it should appear in the A camera. |

Insane, I had 2 lucid dreams last night that were both super intense, one I realized I was dreaming and sat there told myself to wake up and fall back into the same dream, I did it...easily, the other dream I can not remember but when I woke up I felt completely re-energized, I had 2 hours of sleep last night.. As well I awoke to my facebook today to have 3 friends leave me messages about their CRAZY dreams and how I was in it. Strangely I have the knowledge about CME/Crazy dream correlation and have told them about it and told them to look it up. Something is coming. (.__________________________________.) |

Watch SOHO first, then Ahead afterwards.
At the moment, Mercury is opposite Behind. As it circles the Sun, soon it will find itself opposite Earth and SOHO, and after than it will come opposite Ahead.
Running the forecast in Celestia, it looks like it won't be so perfect an alignment for SOHO and Ahead. Mercury will seem to pass above the Sun. |

Mercury is still far from sun and we expect to see him on soho the next days
The object on stereo its supposed behind the sun
so we cant see it from earth
But looking from earth at mercury, mercury will come
at objects position at 13-14 of july
So the object is NOT Mercury because they have 10 days
difference in their positions
The object is 10 days front |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 688092 7/3/2009 11:28 AM | | Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun | Quote | If this object picks up speed soon, then be sure its not Mercury. A normal object towards the Sun would accelerate because of the gravitational pull.
However, same can be said of Mercury - that it should pick up speed - but that wouldn't be ascribed to gravitational pull, but rather to the nature of the elliptical orbit when seen in 2d. BUT, the surface area of Mercury's orbit around Sun is not coplanar with that of the Earth around the Sun!
This means that its more likely to be NOT Mercury!
In any case, if this object finally collides with the Sun, the after effects would only be felt on Earth after a few days. So, till then enjoy folks! |

Nonsense. I've seen few idiots in this thread. We've had 35 pages of rational investigation and reasonable scientific discussion over a legitimate question of what this object might be, and on the whole we've managed to steer admirably well clear of lunacy. We've even managed to keep it civil in tone and not get into flamewars. In a thread that's run for days, and to this length?
I'd say this sort of thing should be encouraged. It's been a valuable intellectual exercise for us all. |
