I'm totally convinced that others in the galactic universe are tired of playing games with us. Its only a matter of time before our existence is squashed. Now a hole through the sun??? not too sure about that
I just noticed, watching the NASA Stereo vid, that the object had sped up and just today, i covered the same distance as it did in the past 2 day. If it was going away from the STEREO view, wouldn't it slow down on the vid?
Okay again for those just tuning into this thing and those to who are worried: If it's mercury fine it will pass, hard to tell in 2D imaging, if it's a comet or 2 or whatever and it "hits" the sun...guess what nothing will happen. Comets are made of gas, ice, dirt, rock, metal, etc...the comets, if that is what they are, won't get past the suns corona-too damn hot, the comets will disintegrate...Okay let's say they do hit what will happen, easy..one big ass solar ejection.
Again here's some scenarios for you all like I said before. It will either pass or be engulfed by the sun..regardless which one, everything will be fine. Tomorrow will still be here in time for the fireworks. I hope this helps some of you who think the frickin world is going to end.

Iris will be in Sagittarius when it brightens to magnitude 9.5 early in June 2009. It is at opposition on July 4 with a magnitude 8.7. After opposition it fades again back to 9.5 in mid August.

At the poorest oppositions, eg in May 2012, Iris' brightest magnitude is 9.5. At the best oppositions it can be as bright as 6.7. No such opposition will occur in the near future.
Iris's diameter is 200 km. Its orbital period is 3.68 years, the orbit being inclined at 5.527° to the ecliptic.
Iris was discovered in 1847 on August 13 by J R Hinds in London. This was his first asteroid discovery

I took a look at today's piuctures and especially this one caught my attention:

On the last animation from stereoB it appears that the object is traveling east to west, but if camera is behind it is really going west to east !
So stereoA which is ahead and not behind gives the impression that the object is not really going east to west but west to east... (wait a minute i`m getting myself confused here) StereoB is behind therefore east to west as we see it is really west to east and the same cannot be said of stereoA as its in front and what we see is object should travel west to east and it is west to east as its infront of earth and not behind.
In conclusion the Occulting disc should mask the object that is traveling east to west as we see it, but is really travelling west to east and should emerge opposite side travelling east to west and is travelling east to west as stereoA is ahead and is true reflection as we see it. This is only true if the object is Mercury, but if it is not it will just be consumed by the occulting disc and will not re-appear from behind as stereoA is ahead of the Earth and not behind !!!! (Feck Me) .......
Hold on will be baack after I check some more Data.....

They look at the sun from about 60 degrees forward ("A") or back ("B") relative to Earth and on the same orbital path.
That is why they are called "Ahead" and "Behind".
The planets inside Earth will always appear to move right to left (going on far side of the Sun) when viewed from either of these satellites, and from Earth.
They are probably not visible going left to right on this side of the sun because the side of the planet in view is not illuminated by the sun.
Out of curiosity, I decided to do some work with the CME impact section of images, as there has been some debate about whether or not this object was close enough to cause the CME to wake outward.
First, I made an animated gif of the sequence, but it's too big to make a custom smiley. You can DL it here:
I brightened the image, boosted the contrast, and added noise and sharpening filters to bring out detail.
Now, I believe the object did not cause a wake in the CME. In the following diagram, you can see the definitive appearance (from our POV) of five bulbous sections of the CME. Those same 5 basic areas seem intact on the other side of the object.
Been watching the Magnetosphere simulator past 30 mins or so and the friggin thing was growing horns out the top on both sides,looks crazy man and the streams were crossing all over the place.
