No its not Mercury..

Mercury is still far from sun and we expect to see him on soho the next days

The object on stereo its supposed behind the sun
so we cant see it from earth

But looking from earth at mercury, mercury will come
at objects position at 13-14 of july

So the object is NOT Mercury because they have 10 days
difference in their positions

The object is 10 days front

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

Mercury has never and will never move directly towards the sun like that. This thing is either trapped in a gravitational pull of some kind or is generating its own gravitational energy. Either way, its going to have a massive affect on the Sun (and Earth).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 679365

Interesting, can you give us more detailed info why you think so?

guys all info has just gone to NO DATA on the stereo site

Some panels have "NO DATA" place-holders.
Data will turn up. Be patient.

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

If this object picks up speed soon, then be sure its not Mercury. A normal object towards the Sun would accelerate because of the gravitational pull.

However, same can be said of Mercury - that it should pick up speed - but that wouldn't be ascribed to gravitational pull, but rather to the nature of the elliptical orbit when seen in 2d. BUT, the surface area of Mercury's orbit around Sun is not coplanar with that of the Earth around the Sun!

This means that its more likely to be NOT Mercury!

In any case, if this object finally collides with the Sun, the after effects would only be felt on Earth after a few days. So, till then enjoy folks!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 688092

Yes, it seems to have picked up some speed in the last few hours in comparison with the first 2 days of observation.
This *could be* an indication that it will really fall into the Sun.

...

Hi Moncrieffe, please take a look at the following video of comet C/2009 G1, posted by the OP at pg2,

[link to www.youtube.com]

it shows similar characteristics of both form and luminosity as the present object.

My guess, following the OP, is that the object is a comet.

In that vid at 0:53, the small object halfway in from the left edge is, I suspect, Mars.

I have enjoyed this thread more than most in the last few months. Very interesting. What goes there??

You do know, that our government has told NASA and others that they are not to notify us of anything ANYTHING in space. This directive came down a few months ago.

I found this forum because from Spain, between 5 and 7 am there are a large planet toward the northeast. And Venus and Mercury are not.

WHAT IS WRONG W/YALL!!!!!!????

Dont yall read the replies?

I even made a thread about what the object is,its iris7 a assteroid, plain and simple
its all right here

Have a lookie at this, its an ass tur oid
Known as iris7
Its looks like its this object thats in the graph in this link>> [link to www.rasnz.org.nz]

Iris at Opposition in 2009
Iris will be in Sagittarius when it brightens to magnitude 9.5 early in June 2009. It is at opposition on July 4 with a magnitude 8.7. After opposition it fades again back to 9.5 in mid August.

The distance of Iris from the Sun varies between 1.833 and 2.937 AU, so that at the most favourable oppositions the asteroid is about 0.83 AU from the Earth. At the 2009 opposition the distance of Iris from the Sun is 2.58 AU and 1.56 AU from the Earth. So the 2009 opposition is an average sort of affair.

At the poorest oppositions, eg in May 2012, Iris' brightest magnitude is 9.5. At the best oppositions it can be as bright as 6.7. No such opposition will occur in the near future.

Iris's diameter is 200 km. Its orbital period is 3.68 years, the orbit being inclined at 5.527° to the ecliptic.

Iris was discovered in 1847 on August 13 by J R Hinds in London. This was his first asteroid discovery
 Quoting: tvtech3

Ok, so now Iris7 has a companion?
There seems to be two objects there.
Also, isn't this object a bit too bright for a small asteroid?

I just noticed, watching the NASA Stereo vid, that the object had sped up and just today, i covered the same distance as it did in the past 2 day. If it was going away from the STEREO view, wouldn't it slow down on the vid?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 716445

Good point, I've noticed the same.

It's probably accelerating due to it's close proximity to the Sun, as a sling effect.

There is still no feed for 2 pictures. One of them is Stereo Behind Cor 2, which provided us with the pictures of this object.
My question is: why there is no feed? What are they hiding?

they're probably having some technical problem to process the images. Usually the last image of the day is for 23:53hs but the last image of July/03 was for 23:38hs.

the images for July/04 should come soon.

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

Dont forget that the Galactic Plane is a denser area of the Cosmos and we may start seeing more of this as we pass through. Why cant NASA give a definitive answer on what this is. Are they trying to play head games with the uninitiated? If its Mercury then just say so. Whats interesting here, is if its not Mercury and it is a comet, then will we see all the people who have been shouting it's Mercury, own up to their shortcomings? If the latest images are correct, it has two nucleus's, and the CME's seem to be trying to push it away from the Sun. I imagine (Uh Oh) the Sun is not to hip to being blasted by comets. I finally managed to read all the pages and see the pics/vids on this thread. Sorry Im late to the party, this is what I live for. Cosmic Doom. Sweet. At least it will be quick. CME vs Mag
