And how many are there? If it's 2 then what does that mean?
Maybe they're just moons and we can't see anything 'bigger' yet until it gets closer? |

NASA couild be stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. On the one hand, if they don't tell us about something so important, how long do you think we as the taxpayers will support them?
On the other, if they do own up and tell us it indeed is an object heading towards the sun it might cause a massive panic.
Interesting to say the least, and if they cut the pics, we will know that it is something they don't want us to know about, but a little late for that now.
Yes, they have this dilemma, but if it's a comet it'll will probably cause no big harm even if it hits the Sun.
Probably a big flare, nothing more.
But, yes, they should be more forthcoming.
This "object" is everywhere, Moncrieffe even e-mailed them about it. It is on Youtube now.
I don't believe they don't have more information.
And if they have why they don't release it??
However, if the object is Mercury, they have no dilemma, and no need to say anything. And they are not saying anything, right?
Something similar will happen in the days following July 26 when Stereo-A will observe an object approaching the Sun from the right, but on that occasion it will "miss" and go above the Sun, Mercury being well above the ecliptic then. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 713628
As many have posted, this cannot possibly be Mercury since there is no way for Mercury to travel this fast!
Also Mercury is moving from right to left right now and not left to right like this object! |

Yes.The Sun will flare at it as it approaches with little or no effect.I've been observing this object for several years now.It comes and goes periodically.12/31/07 was a fine example of this. But this object is not round,it is in the shape of a Deltoid(like an enlongated triangle or torpedo shape).Oddly, sometimes it seems to stop and at other times seem to change course suddenly.

These are fairly low resolution images. Sometimes it looks elongated, and all sorts of other shapes. Two distinct points must be one of the large range of renditions. I don't think it is important. Image to image it's just a blob. No great importance should be attached to the last (or any one) image.
It is Mercury. In a day or two it will be on it's merry way away from the Sun on the other side. |

I can't prove it's not Mercury either. But all evidence seems to point to a different object, not a planet (therefore not Mercury).
If it's Mercury it's fine for me, but I truly think it's not.
The OP gave some reasons why it should not be Mercury. Unfortunately I cannot go any deeper than his words because
I don't have any great knowledge on the details of Astronomy and the satellites of NASA, but the points the OP has made in the first 5 pages of this thread have not been challenged IMO.
And the pictures I see from the various satellites seem to confirm his conclusions.
Then, although I cannot prove it's not Mercury the entire logic of this discussion seems (to me) to indicate that it's not.
But of course, in a few days all doubts will be dissipated, and if I'm wrong I'll be glad to come back and concede my mistake.
The latest pictures seem to indicate the "object" has a double core, a binary system, and everyone knows that Mercury and Venus have no moons. |

Transits of Objects through the LASCO/C3 FOV in 2009

All dates and magnitudes are approximate.
Jan 14 - Feb04 Jupiter -1.9mag Left to Right
Jan 17 - Jan24 Mercury 3.7mag Left to Right

Sep 08 - Sep27 Saturn 1.2mag Left to Right
Sep 17 - Sep24 Mercury 4.0mag Left to Right
Oct 24 - Nov20 Mercury -1.4mag Right to Left
Dec 09 - Feb15 Venus -3.9mag Right to Left
* Venus is fractionally outside (above) the LASCO C3 field of view during this pass.
The LASCO/C3 instrument is on the SOHO satellite positioned at L1 between Earth and the Sun.
The images we are looking at here are from Stereo B, further to the "left", back along Earth's orbit.
As Mercury leaves Stereo B's field of view in a few days time, it will enter the LASCO/C3 FOV (see bolded above), moving in the same direction - right to left. |

I agree, I've just checked the page of SOHO, for transits through LASCO and they show what you've posted.
Therefore it's not left to right but the opposite and it seems that the OP made a mistake here.
Therefore it should be Mercury.
But I have a final doubt.
I've checked the images of Mercury on STEREO Behind COR2 for March/19 and 20 and observed that the speed of Mercury on those pictures is half of the speed of the object that we're analyzing on this thread.
In addition, in those pictures Mercury is transiting from left to right and therefore is closer to the satellite and Earth than it is now, then I'd expect it's angular movement to be faster then than now, but it's twice slower.
Also the form of the planet in the March-19-20 pictures is quite stable and well defined, egg shaped, while in the present thread pictures it changes drastically almost from one picture to the next.
All these aspects seem to be contradictory, don't you think? |

Mercury's orbit is quite elliptical, so the orbital speed changes a lot. As much as factor of two from slowest to fastest? Maybe it is that much. Who could know? Mr Kepler no doubt. |
