Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

(snip)
But I have a final doubt.

I've checked the images of Mercury on STEREO Behind COR2 for March/19 and 20 and observed that the speed of Mercury on those pictures is half of the speed of the object that we're analyzing on this thread.

In addition, in those pictures Mercury is transiting from left to right and therefore is closer to the satellite and Earth than it is now, then I'd expect it's angular movement to be faster then than now, but it's twice slower.

Also the form of the planet in the March-19-20 pictures is quite stable and well defined, egg shaped, while in the present thread pictures it changes drastically almost from one picture to the next.

All these aspects seem to be contradictory, don't you think?

Mercury's orbit is quite elliptical, so the orbital speed changes a lot. As much as factor of two from slowest to fastest? Maybe it is that much. Who could know? Mr Kepler no doubt.

and now we have no more data?

You can see it in COR2... the panel above "NO DATA" of STEREO Behind.

oh yes... so it is still there. Yesterday we lost it for some images
 Quoting: Ostria

there are no COR2 images for July/04 yet.

Or it could be just camera "malfunction", see something similar here:

it seems to double everything it shows

The object (which now I agree it's probably Mercury) continues to change shape from picture to picture.
The pictures from COR2 behind show a much more stable form than those of the last few days.
I guess what could be causing this?

I read
Each STEREO spacecraft has two coronagraphs which study the Sun from space. These two coronagraphs, which are part of STEREO's SECCHI suite of imagers, have different fields of view, using different sized occulting disks to allow us to see the faint corona at different distances from the Sun's surface.

So maybe COR2 is down "for maintenance".

And I think 717633 is right. The object looks more stable in COR1.

I found this nice video (nice music too)
enjoy!

Q.: There are said new sightings, by lots of people on GLP, of a new said comet, which is said to be coming towards Earth.

OLD ZETATALK (2004): What would happen if the Earth, backing up from Planet X which is coming at Earth in a virtual head-on orbit, reversed orbit?
(snipped)
* Such a move would find the rising of near solar system planets such as Mars or Venus to come early.
(snipped)
Comets come early, because the orbit of Earth has backed into them. Comets orbit the Sun in the same counterclockwise motion that the planets assume in their orbits. Thus, the dates assumed an Earth running ahead of the comets, the comets needing this time to catch up to the Earth in her orbit. Earth stopped, reversed, and the dates have arrived early!

I gotta bad feelin about dis bollo. Still no images, how convenient that as this object gets close enough to the sun for us to actually see what may or may not be happening, Stereo B goes off line........

yeh right..
Enjoy the weekend folks, I think life is about very interesting

If I'm right and this object does hit, then surely we should be able to see something on Stereo A soon enough, I have a quick look at the movie of images and if you look towards the bottom left hand side , behind the sun, you can see what does indeed look like a CME shooting off

I have no idea how to post it here so go check it our for yourselves..

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

And I think 717633 is right. The object looks more stable in COR1.
 Quoting: Ostria

It makes sense that it would. Assume that it's Mercury and that the flickering was due to the sensor being dazzled by the object's brightness. Well, COR2 is designed to study the cooler, thinner outer corona and solar wind, so it's an extremely sensitive camera and the brightness of Mercury produces a significant dazzle effect, spilling over unpredictably into neighbouring pixels and producing the shifting, flickering blob we've seen all week.

Now it's moved into COR1. COR1 is designed to study the much brighter inner corona, the region just above the surface of the Sun. Mercury's still very bright, but it won't dazzle this camera so much, so we'll get less flickering and a more stable picture.

I would say it was not Mercury. Mercury to start July 6th and will be complete Conjuct July 14th and then moving out which will be taking a two week process.
