Unknown object quickly approaching the Sun

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

It would be interesting, for example, if you could get a close up on those pictures showing two sources of light close together, like the following one of Jul/03

I'm working on it....seems their available .fits files only range up to the 2nd of the month.

I'm looking elsewhere for now to see if I can find the data.

Great!

Things still seem fishy here because the dots are not connecting as easily as they should, for an object as well known as Mercury is supposed to be.

I'm looking for other images from previous sequences of COR1 and COR2 to compare with the present ones to see if they bring some enlightenment on this puzzle.

The last time Mercury was in this position for Stereo-B was about Mar 15 2009, and the "STEREO Daily Browse Images and Plots" page at
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
can only access images back to a month ago, so ...

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

Thanks AC 713628 & ScrumpTheTexan. Maybe I can find the .fts files for those images and see what can be weaned from them.

As for the 2nd, this is the only anomalous frame I could find:

object2

All the other frames had the same basic form as the previous close-up. I may have to wait until they get the site updated to get better images.

Anyhow, off for the evening, will check in on this tomorrow morning.

Hmmm, looks like pixel spillover to me.

Just wanted to stop in at a forum I used to visit regularly and say thanks. The posts here steered me towards rational thought and critical thinking due to the exceptional amount of stupid bullshit posted here. Of course my change of mind led to many heated exchanges, but that's what you get when dealing with those blinded by faith in an idea. (Or in the case of conspiracies, a narrative)

But still 3 or 4 hours before it re-emerges from behind the Sun from Stereo-B's point of view.

SOHO is between Earth and Sun. Stereo-B is in Earth's orbit path, but further "back".

I have downloaded the all images from COR2-B from Mar/18/09 to Mar/22/09 (initial 5 hours) using the ftp connection which permits to download batches of files. You go to

ftp://stereoftp.nascom.nasa.gov

then cd to "pub/browse/2009/03/dd/behind/cor2/1024", where "dd" is the day you want. I use "total-commander" ( [link to www.ghisler.com] ), which permits batch downloads from ftp connections.

The pictures show an "object" approximately twice slower than the object shown in the COR2 images of this thread and moving from left to right.

Therefore Mercury in those pics is supposed to be farther away than the object in the present thread and nonetheless the present object is nearly twice as fast.

As someone said previously here we're dealing with some turbo-Mercury here or it's not Mercury at all.

I'll try to make a movie of the two sets of pictures and post them, but I don't know how successful I can be on this specific task!:-)

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

"At aphelion, Mercury is over 20% further from the Sun than normal, and as a result, moves about 17% slower than normal, in its orbit around the Sun; and, being 20% further away than usual, even if it were moving at the same speed as usual, it would LOOK like it was moving slower (that is, it would move at a slower angular velocity), as seen from the Sun. The net result is that the orbital motion of four degrees per day, on the average, slows to only 2/3 of that, or less than three degrees per day. "

[link to cseligman.com]

Mercury's orbit is far from circular, so the orbital speed varies a lot from slowest to fastest. This would account for the different observed speeds across the images at different times.

Nasa has been less than helpful. (MAJOR understatement)

Re: Unknown object quickly approaching the SunQuote

I reckon the object will reappear to the left of the bright area in the COR1 images at about 4AM July 5 EDT (at 2009 Jul 5 08:00:00 UT).

In the following hours it will continue moving right to left out of the field of view.

Watch for it in the thumbnails here:

By that time the link will be

(which is a "404 Not Found" until 8PM EDT today)

For anyone who thinks that object was our very own planet Mercury, see the size comparison of Sun and Mercury:-

And the object that you all see in these SOHO and STEREO images is at least four times the size of Earth!

NASA says "The STEREO space weather beacon telemetry mode is a very low rate, highly compressed data stream broadcast by the spacecraft 24 hours per day. These data are used for space weather forecasting. Because of the large compression factors used, these beacon images are of much lower quality than the actual science data."
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

and it is VERY bright in that position directly opposite the Sun from Stereo-B.

THANK YOU!! And to everyone who thinks it's not mercury. Even if an object 4 times the size of Earth hit the Sun, I highly doubt it would have any major effect on us except a light show for astronomers. Goofy Thum
