Is it still safe to accept a certified check when selling a used car? A guy came and left a deposit and I forget to tell him cash only and he says he already got half the money in a certified check. How should I do this w/o getting ripped off?

it's certified the funds are in the account. more than likely your bank will still hold the check. better off cashing it at their bank.

You can always call the bank to verify funds and authenticity of a check before accepting it.

Cash only. If all he has is a certified check, tell him to take it back to the issuing bank, get cash and come see you to complete the deal.

Certified checks can be forged just as easily as a personal check.

+1 CASH ONLY

Even with cash I would validate the authenticity of the bills.

Absolutely NOT.

I friend is a teller at the bank. She says she sees a dozen or so fake cashier's checks coming thru.

They are especially risky if they are drawn on a small bank and you do not know what that banks checks look like, or even if that bank exists.

Usually one phone call to the branch where it is written can tell you. They will probably send you to someone else, but I can usually get them to check their in store log.

Thanks, I haven't accepted one in years. I'm sure the guy isn't trying to scam me but I don't have enough money to pay "what ifs."

NO way on any checks! Tell dude to cash it himself and bring the cash. Be sure to check the large bills for that ingrained stripe to be sure they're real.
