They're spaying the sky? How will clouds be born now?

NormalLargeExtra LargeTHOUSANDS of fish have been killed by a sudden pollution of the river Trent, campaigners said last night.

The National Rivers Authority is investigating the contamination, which may have been caused by illegal fly- tipping into a sewage system near Nottingham.

Of about 500 anglers who took part in a National Fishing Union match on Saturday, those below the Stoke Bardolph sewage works outfall, near Nottingham, caught nothing, while those above it achieved catches of 10lb or more.

'Something was drastically wrong with that river,' one competitor, Tony Warburton, a member of the Clean Rivers Trust, said.

Yesterday, dead fish were picked out of the river at Newark, 18 miles downstream.

An NRA spokesman said: 'We are still counting dead fish and trying to find the cause. It looks as if it was a fairly significant contamination.'

A spokesman for the Severn- Trent water company said: 'We believe there may have been an illegal discharge of a substance which adversely affected the biological process of our Stoke Bardolph sewage treatment works. The substance may well have passed through and had an impact on the river Trent.'

Harvey Wood, a Clean Rivers Trust co-ordinator, said: 'It could take years for fish stocks to recover.'

Angling: Agency investigates death of Trent fish
Thursday, July 02, 2009, 07:30Comment on this story

ENVIRONMENT Agency fisheries are currently investigating after around 1,000 fish were killed in the Rivers Trent, Tame and Anker.
Heavy rain in Birmingham last weekend caused the sewerage system to overflow, with water containing sewage discharges flowing into the rivers.
Pollution removes oxygen from water so that fish are at risk of suffocation.
Oxygen levels have been increased manually but it is estimated that around 1,000 fish have died.
George Hillyard, from Chaddesden, saw several dead carp in the weeds on the Trent near Swarkestone.
He said: "It's saddening to see this happen."
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "We will review the state of the rivers and consider

Yes because the river dove which is a tributary of the Trent is usually crystal clear upstream but was also murky

In Poland:

Swimmers have been banned from the Zegrzynski Reservoir in the Warsaw suburbs by the Voivodship Sanitary and Epidemiological Station (Sanepid) because thousands of dead fish have been found floating dead on the top of the water for unknown reasons. “It is still unknown what the reasons [for the situation] are. The state of the fish could be attributed to a lack of oxygen or to the presence of unusual bacteria that could be dangerous for people. Samples of the water have been taken in order to determine the cause. For safety reasons, swimming has been banned,” stated Wieslaw Rozbicki, Sanepid spokesperson. Currently, the dead fish are being scooped out of the water. There is no decision yet when the reservoir’s swimming areas will be reopened for the public.

The water is not considered directly dangerous for humans, but the unsettling situation with the fish has caused Sanepid to order the reservoir closed. Sanitary services claim that the situation with the fish is likely related to the recent flooding throughout the country. Rivers have flooded their banks and have been affected by many foreign bio masses that could affect the bacterial content of the water. Opened in 1963, the Zegrzynski Reservoir was created after a dam was built on the Narew River in Debe and is 30 square kilometer with a maximum width of 3.5 km. The water is filtered for drinking water and used for agricultural purposes. The dam holds a hydroelectric power plant.)

Re: ALL THE FISH HAVE DIED IN OUR RIVER..WATERS MURKY
It's usually caused by summer heat which depletes the oxygen in the water. It is exacaerbated by plant growth which slows down the current, further depleting the oxygen.
