WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.
In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.

The more I think about this, the more it feels like extortion. Literally being punished for not giving insurance companies profits.

This will apply to everyone, whether they have a job with benefits or not. (If you do not have a job with benefits, you will have to enroll in the public coverage.) |

However, that's a faulty analogy, because at least people have the fucking choice of whether they want to drive or not....but with this shitty legislation, there is no possible way to opt out..unless you're dead.

INSURANCE COMPANIES are and until you all wake up to that fact and begin directing your complaints and your efforts right there.....this will continue to be an exercise in futility. DO SOME RESEARCH for cryin out loud. FIND OUT how your HMO's and your PPO's came into existence.....Learn how to read the freaking EOB's you get after your medical visits. (EOB: Explanation of Benefits)
95% of people just throw those into the garbage when they get em and they contain the information you need to understand how this whole messed up system works....and WHY.

This "fine" imposition is nothing new. It was all part of the package from the git go. I think the whole flam damn thing is absurd, but once again....no one has asked me. |

No one would need to fill the role of "mommy & daddy" if folks would pay attention to their own life and live responsibly and stop trying to take everyone to court because they can.
This is what has been ASKED for.....and now 1) we're surprised by it and 2) until American's start doing something more than smoking and drinking coffee for breakfast, lunch & dinner, YOUR health care costs will continue to foot the bill. |

I respectfully disagree.
Try this: Cancel your health insurance coverage, if you have it. Then visit a doctor for any routine health issue you may have. See how that works out for you. (Specifically, you can try this: Go to a hospital to have a baby delivered. Then tell me if your medical bills are in any way affordable.)
I will certainly agree that the insurance companies are pure robbers. But they are really just the icing on the cake.
Both health care providers and health insurers are behind the skyrocketing medical costs in this country. |

Well they better get us some pretty damn good paying jobs if they want to shove that down our throats. Seems to me that they did a good job of giving our jobs away.
I don't need nor want their so-called health insurance. I've been perfectly fine without it. In fact, I avoid doctors.
If anything we need to help our Gov't out by sending them to some psychiatrists so they can figure out where their brains went. That would be a good start! lol lol |

The Canadian health care system is not perfect, but it does work. Nobody goes bankrupt or into foreclosure, due to medical bills.
Why not adopt the whole scheme in total ? Just say, we want the Canadian medical insurance system... then you can fine tune it as you wish.
If the doctors bitch, then they can go work in another country. Like Croatia or the Sudan.
You should be easing suffering, and saving lives, not Big Corp's ass.
