I have little sympathy for this woman. My mother and father (in their mid-60s to late 70's respectively) still have to work to make ends meet even after retirement, so 67 is not too old for this lady to get out and get a job...just like the "little people" she and her family lied to for decades. |

Feds Seize Madoff Penthouse, Wife Evicted
Ruth Madoff Reportedly Pleaded with U.S. Marshals to Allow Her to Keep Her Fur Coat
(CBS/ AP) Federal marshals took possession of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff's $7 million Manhattan penthouse on Thursday in a move that forced his wife to move elsewhere.
Proceeds from a sale of the property and its contents could be used to help reimburse those who lost billions of dollars investing with Madoff before he confessed to running a Ponzi scheme.
U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione said the marshals arrived at the property at noon with a court order permitting them to take custody of the apartment and to make anyone living there move out.
Guccione said Madoff's wife Ruth had been advised in advance of the marshals' plans and was leaving the residence and surrendering all personal property.
"She will be leaving," he said at midday. "Restitution for the victims is the government's top priority."
A U.S. Marshal source at the scene told CBS News investigative producer Pat Milton that Ruth Madoff was reluctant to leave the apartment and pleaded with the marshals to allow her to keep her fur coat. They told her no.
Marshals will be changing the locks, but they do not plan to remove any items today, CBS News has learned.
By about 1 p.m., the 67-year-old Ruth Madoff had left. It was not immediately clear where she went to live.
"Ruth moved out voluntarily pursuant to the prior agreements we reached with the government," said her laywer, Peter Chavkin.
According to the New York Post, Madoff's next move is unclear because several Manhattan buildings have refused to rent to her.
The 71-year-old Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison. He pleaded guilty in March to charges that his investment advisory business was a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that wiped out thousands of investors and ruined charities.
Authorities said Madoff had carried out the fraud for at least two decades before confessing to his sons in December that his investment business was a fraud and that he had lost as much as $50 billion.
Last week, Ruth Madoff agreed to give up all of her possessions in return for a promise that federal prosecutors would not pursue $2.5 million not tied to the fraud. The money, though, is not protected from civil legal actions that might be pursued by a court-appointed trustee liquidating Madoff's assets or by investor lawsuits.
Ruth Madoff broke her silence Monday when she said in a statement that her husband "stunned us all with his confession and is responsible for this terrible situation in which so many now find themselves."
Before she agreed on a deal with the government to resolve her finances a week ago, Ruth Madoff had indicated through lawyers that she planned to try to keep the penthouse and an additional $62 million in assets as unrelated to the fraud.
Before the fraud was exposed, the Madoffs had homes in Palm Beach, Fla., the south of France and the tip of Long Island along with the midtown Manhattan penthouse. They also traveled by private jet and yacht.

Unfortunately you are wrong, a lot of laws get passed because lawmakers react to emotions. Not all laws, but a lot of really stupid ones. Example, kids getting expelled for having aspirin, getting 5 years for having pot, expelled for carrying a weapon(fork with lunch to school) I could go on and on, but it's like talking to the wall. |

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The wife of accused swindler Bernard Madoff pulled $15.5 million out of a Madoff-related brokerage firm in Massachusetts in the weeks before his arrest, authorities there disclosed Wednesday.
Bernard Madoff is under 24-hour house arrest in his Upper East Side luxury apartment.
The withdrawals by Ruth Madoff took place in November and December, according to a complaint filed by state regulators against Cohmad Securities, a firm they said was "intertwined" with Madoff's New York-based company.
The regulators say Cohmad has refused to provide information about its ties to Madoff, who is accused of running a Ponzi scheme that may have cost investors up to $50 billion.
Daily wire transaction reports show Cohmad was aware of transfers to and from Madoff-related accounts, the filing states.
"For example, the few reports produced by Cohmad show that Ruth Madoff withdrew $5.5 million on November 25, 2008 and withdrew $10 million on December 10, 2008," investigators said.
Bernard Madoff, 70, was arrested December 11 and is currently under house arrest in his Manhattan luxury apartment. He faces one charge of securities fraud in connection with an international scheme that has cost some investors their life savings and could face up to 20 years in prison and a $5 million fine if convicted.
In January, prosecutors tried to revoke his $10 million bail after he mailed more than $1 million worth of diamond-studded jewelry to friends and family, a move they said showed he was trying to move assets out of government hands. But a judge ruled Madoff was neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk.
Prosecutors and Madoff's lawyers have agreed for a second time to push back the deadline for an indictment or probable cause hearing for the former investor, sources close to the case said Wednesday. The previous deadline of Wednesday -- which was itself a delay -- has now been moved back another 30 days.
Madoff and the Securities and Exchange Commission already have agreed to a partial civil judgment against the disgraced investment manager, one that could eventually force him to pay fines and return investors' money.
Under the terms of the deal, Madoff will keep a previously reached agreement to freeze his assets and not to violate any other securities laws, but it does not require him to admit or deny any allegations.

She's known for days or weeks she had to move out. She sure as hell could have taken a fur with her and come back wearing a cloth coat and repeated the same routine several times.
I cannot believe she's scream about her coat! Fuck the jewels and art were probably worth 30 million easily! Wonder how much of those she managed to abscond with?
As for NYC buildings refusing to rent to her - fuck em. Let their apartments sit vacant then! She's an old woman probably still quite wealthy whether anyone knows it or not, and I'm sure she has money stashed in Israel or other places that will defend it for her. She wasn't stupid. Well, not THAT stupid.
When this shit match began to unwind she had plenty of opportunity to move her cash around LONG before today.
With 2.5 million in the bank, she can do a LOT with it. Including put it into a retirement account that is bulletproof from claims.
I feel sorry for her on the outside chance she didn't really know what shit he was pulling all these years... |

Do ya think maybe this woman lived in denial? I am a woman, and for years we were so poor I did not deal with bills and finacial stuff at all. I did not want to be depessed by it, my husband did it and from week to week he would say , its ok. Deep inside I knew it wasn't ok. I imagine poor or rich people can think the same way. I knew we were really poor. Maybe this lady lived in denial the same way I did...even though she was rich... ya know same thing really, I did not want to know how poor I was...maybe she didn't want to know how rich she was...or how she got it. |
