I always though the best religion is your own and nobody else as you must be right and they must be wrong (that applies to agnostic and atheists as well!).

OK<,so to be fair, I guess I'd have to compare and contrast the five major religions to make this statement, but to be fairer, I have never been a student of darkness.
I mean, darkness is darkness. Wherever it came from and wherever it goes, it's still darkness.
Why give it the time of day to study it?

Oh, alright, I'll do this quickly, but then I'm going golfing.
First, we got Judaism which is based upon the old testament - perhaps the biggest collection of dark tales ever - with thousands upon thousands of references to blood sacrifice, murder, stoning, burnt offerings and the like.
It's the other messianic religion but they don't accept that Jesus was god - as the messiah has not yet landed - which is a good thing. Makes the Jews smarter than most. Because Jesus didn't exist.
Oh, there is also a faction that accepts reincarnation. Don't ask me how it fits with their beliefs, but it does make them smarter.
But to their detriment, they are all hung up on "the law" - which of course, is pulp fiction gone awry. Sorry. Ain't no laws from on high.
Subtract three points.

Then we got Christianity. The Steven Spielberg of fantasy religions with goblins and boogey men - with super heroes and saints galore.
The whole religion centers around the mythical figure Jesus, who came to earth to preach peace and harmony - only to have his graduation present a big, bloody, cross upon which he demonstrated to all mankind that it doesn't matter how you behave as all you do is drink his blood and you are forgiven - even the animals who strung him up - especially the animals who strung him up.
Oh, and although they are the only true religion by their own testimony, they do have a soft spot for Jews because they think their Jesus was Jewish, so Jews can't be all bad. A tad too thrifty perhaps, but regular guys all the same.
Yes, a master being would accept labels such as a "Jew".
Go figure.

A pretty lofty and cerebral religion. More a treatise on ethical behavior, which is a good thing. Plenty of good things about Buddhism - except....life is pain and suffering????

Nothing against Islam. They respect and honor and acknowledge about 120 other prophets, even Jesus - BUT - and this is a huge BUTT - Muhammad is their man by a thousand miles and their guy in the sky reigns supreme.

I don't know. Looks like a quack to me.
So I get to the golf course and the tee is open. Yippee !!! I timed it right !!! I get my stuff out and walk briskly to the pay window, up and around a bend. Only have 2 hours to play 9 holes. Have a party to go to. I get up there and there are 4 groups of men plus their spouses or girlfriends putting their bags onto carts - and one girl is saying to the other:
"Have you ever played before? I haven't"
And I'm thinking...."Ohhhhh shit...."
Sure enough, they get on the tee and it looks like the special olympics of golf. ( no offense to the handicapped).
So I putted around and came home.
Damn holiday weekends.

OK, moving right along, I save Hinduism for last because it has the most going for it by far. It really isn't a religion as it has no beginning. It is said it is as old as the earth. And if centers around the Vedas - the song of life - the sounds of the universe - complete with mantras that expand awareness and deepen beingness......
Oh, sure, it can be a bit wacky like Christianity in its infinite devas (saints to you westerners) but in all fairness, they see, and thus depict the divine in everything - which is much closer to the reality of life. Their scripture is perhaps the most useful of all scriptures - the Bhagavad Gita - which covers the wheel of life - karma - the states of consciousness - reincarnation - and dharma. I mean, what else is there?
Three points for Hinduism.

You see, boys and girls, moms and dads, harlots and zealots, it's not so much religion as it is the people who practice religion.
Sure, religion is guaranteed to keep you stupid and uninformed about everything from the nature of man to the nature of life to how the universe functions - but - every religion does contain some good secular principles of behavior, that if actually practiced, would make this world a peaceful, loving place. BUT, and this is a huge BUTT, it's where religions collide and compete - where they contrast and compare themselves to one another - and then start to claim the spiritual high ground over others where all hell breaks loose. (Ironic, isn't it, that religion causes the most hell on earth?) Anywho, that is the great drawback of religion other than keeping people stupid - it pits civilizations against one another in eternal conflict - and once more - and every greater ironically - all under the banner of "god" - perhaps the worst invention of mankind, responsible for the most bloodshed of all time.....
Can I get an AMEN ????

The purpose that religions were invented for in the first place was to give people a reason that is outside of themselves for good behavior towards each other. By the carrot of the promise of heaven and the stick of the promise of damnation it kind of puts the policeman inside the practitioners head. This is actually quite a good idea, when a majority of people will not think and analyze the implications of their behavior for themselves. Later on, some bright sparks discovered that they could get power and influence over people by directing the course of the inhibitions that were placed in peoples minds. When control of peoples behavior became an imperative for leaders they came up with all sorts of interesting ideas to make sure that the people did not stray far from their will. The ultimate in control is the Islamic practice of praying five times a day, at sometimes rather strange hours. Just how far can someone run away before being discovered to be missing when everyone breaks their sleep to go kowtow, then repeat it another four times each day. Not only that the control that is exerted by everyone noticing the comings and goings of others is not to be sniffed at. "I noticed that you were not at mid morning prayers" makes people feel as if they are being watched and that strongly modifies their behavior. The violence inherent in religion is because there is a dissonance between observable reality and the model that the adherent has to adopt in their minds. They cannot allow questioning to appear to interfere with faith, because of the fear that they may have to question and possibly break away from it. The few "good" bits in religions are there so that the people who argue in favor of it have something to point at as an example of its benefit. |
