Any here had total knee replacement?
Quote

If so would you share your experience with me? I am trying to decide to do it or not, under my MD's advice. I am a little fearful of the pain and my down time.

true story, a friend of my kid (23 ys old) has a small chin. He had a fake plastic insert operation to give him a manly chin and he went blind.

a few weeks later, they went in to fix the problem, NOW he is deaf.

blind and deaf.

nobody understands what happened, but he is fucked.

My mom was destined for knee replacement until she sought out alternative medical advice. She obtained a top-quality food allergy test (not your run of the mill test but one that tests for hundreds of allergies) and found out that she was allergic to several of her favorite foods. She started following her prescribed diet and the knee problems vanished completely. She has to have the allergy tests updated annually because allergies shift and change. As long as she follows her prescribed diet her knee and joint problems are completely absent. Other longstanding health complaints have also responded to the allergen-free diet.

It may be hard to believe and your regular medical doctors will almost surely scoff but many common complaints are just allergies. You should experiment a little more before surgery.

I am a physician and many of my patients have had bilateral knee replacements with mixed results. Some are extatic, have no pain and are able to do everything they want. They are not able to kneel though, that is a limitation set by the surgeon. Some are worse than before and some report no change. If you are likely to live 15 years more they will likely need to be redone. Some of my patients contracted a chronic infection and have to take lifelong antibiotics! One or two were left with dropped foot which is no joke. One lucky lady lost 45 lb and no longer needed the surgery. So if you are young and overweight try to lose weight and see if it makes a difference. If you are committed to surgery find the Doc with the best results and realize that you will have to work very hard in rehab. I actually need new knees but am waiting and am tying to lose some weight. Try to keep the exercise up as much as is possible and if you need pain medicine ask for it. Good luck! I hope that helped! hf

thanks much for this info, childoflight!

i had a right knee replacement in 2002, and was told it would last 10 years. the surprise to me was that knee pain still remains. it does have limited range of motion.

my left knee needs a replacement too, but i had a right side stroke 6 months ago, and my "weak" leg [the right one] is now my "strong" leg... and it's balking and biting back.

would i do it again? no.

If you were silly enough to get a flu shot this past fall then wait a year, not kidding.Something in the vaccine gets inside and destroys the new knee replacement and you will end up having to have it replaced again. The VA surgeons know this but so far it has not reached mainstream, remember this industry is self policed.

My dad had one and was going to have the other later. But he was so unhappy with the one, he never had the other done. He was unhappy with the results as far as pain level and activity limitations.

Re: Any here had total knee replacement?Quote

Ok, I had mine done in 07. I had lived 15 years in excrutiating pain and swelling, steroids, codene etc... I finally couldnt put it off any longer (Bone on Bone is a very finely tuned pain). So I asked a few family members who were older than me how it was. I generally got the "Oh its not that bad and I feel great now" answer. So I went in optimistic.

Im not going to lie, when I awoke post-op, I thought I was going to die. They have your new leg strapped so tight that you think its going to explode. The pain is intense, so the morphene drip is something you will need, (Unless you're allergic to morphene). So the next day, they take off the bindings and start to get you up out of bed. Yeah sure, you say to yourself, Im not about to move. But that would be the wrong approach, so just go with it, take the pain and know that the new knee is stronger than the ones you were born with. Once you master the toilet you're on your way.

Ok, after about 3 to 5 days in the Hospital they roll you out and you get your first big challenge, getting into the car. It's the first of many hurdles that you are going to be faced with, bathing, sleeping, going to the John is especially fun.

I swore that I was going to kill all my family members who said it was not "That Bad". It is bad, but you still have to keep moving and using the exercises that they show you. You will have a physical therapist that comes to your home and you wont really appreciate their faces after the first visit. But they are your lifeline to recovery. Its imperative to exercise every chance that you can. And there will be times when you cant, so just take it slow and progress at your own pace. You will have to bend your knee to close to 90 degree and that will be your highest hurdle as will straightening out the knee. Both of these are your highest goal.

All in all it took 6 weeks to get over the "Oh what have I done to myself?", phase, the pain will be intermittent after that for about a year, decreasing with time.

Now Ive got 2 years under my belt and I'm ecstatic over my progress. I swore Id never do it again at first, but now when my other knee eventually goes out, I will do it again, knowing fully well the mountain that will lay before me. Its about being positive through the pain. It will hurt like hell, but in the end it will be worth it.

I just wish I hadnt run 2 miles a day for 20 years. That killed my knees, I guess those Converse (Skats) werent all that they were cracked up to be. LOL.

Good luck.

Re: Any here had total knee replacement?Quote

Had both knees done in separate surgeries in 08. Mine were driven by arthritis and nearly bone on bone. Not much pain but lots of weakness. Post surgery was just fine and I did all physical therapy as directed, that is crucial. Back to work after six weeks on both surgeries. As the Dr. said above, I can't kneel worth a hoot and both are a bit stiff but it was well worth it. Vast majority of folks I know who've had it done are very happy. Get a Dr. with good references!! Good luck.
