| Quote |
I need to buy a new laptop.
I trade stocks and need reasonable speed, but am not a gamer.
I'm leaning toward Toshiba, HP, Gateway.
They have what I want for about $650 at Best Buy.
CNET recommends Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and HP CV7T, but they are more expensive.
360 Gig hard drive. 4 Gig RAM, dual processor.
Any suggestions? |

I got an HP desktop about 6 months ago, and fried the hard drive within 4 months. Pissed me off.
I have the inspiron 1525, I trades stocks with it, and am very pleased with the performance of this unit. |

I dont use laptops but I have been buying HP Pavillion desktops since 1994 and have never had a failure of any kind. I still have the p90 running:) and a p266, and a p400, and my last one is a AMD 3300. all four still hummming away like brand new....all have upgraded video cards and were mostly used for heavy gaming. never had any issues at all. |

My company paid $3,000 for a Dell laptop...unbelievable.
They were reliable back then.
But Dell has lost it's luster and their customer service sucks. |

United States 7/4/2009 2:09 AM | | Re: What is the best computer to buy | Quote | HP G60-230US *Est. $550
Among the cheapest laptops, the HP G60-230US and very similar HP G60-235DX offer the best blend of value and performance. The Pentium dual-core processor is older technology, and a step down from the Core 2 Duo processors… found in more costly machines, but also a step up from the weaker processors more typically found in similarly priced laptops. The rest of the feature lineup is solid, and includes 3 GB of RAM, a 320 GB hard drive, a 16-inch display and a DVD burner. Some worthwhile extras -- such as an ExpressCard slot -- are missing, and battery life could be better, but experts and users say you'd be hard-pressed to find a better performer at the same price.
---------------------------------------------------------
Gateway MD7801u *Est. $600
Whether you want a cheap laptop for home, school or business, reviews say that the Gateway MD7801u can deliver the goods thanks to its ample 15.6-inch display, a modern Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard… drive and a DVD burner. Complaints are relatively few, though some say it's on the heavy side for comfortable travel and that the case seems to attract fingerprints. Graphics and gaming performance aren't good, but that's expected given the lack of a discrete graphics card -- and typical of most laptops in its price class. The MD7801u features a black case, but it is also available in burgundy as the Gateway MD7818u. |

It is true that Macs don't get many viruses, but that has nothing to do with it being a superior platform like they want you to believe. It's just because, compared to pc's, there aren't many Macs out there, and who wants to code a virus which can't even attack the fast majority of computers? They are getting more viruses recently, though, and Apple now (subtly) recommends users get anti-virus programs.
Also they've had a lot of quality issues, especially with their displays and batteries.
So that leaves us with the fashion statement.
I'll take my windows pc, thanks. |

United States 7/4/2009 2:18 AM | | Re: What is the best computer to buy | Quote | Out of your choices, I'd go with Toshiba. Not a great option if you're a gamer, because most models use Intel graphics instead of Nvidia, but if you casually play games and want a solid model, it's one of the most consistent brands I've seen at the lower end. It's a good brand if you're looking at running Linux or another non-Microsoft operating system, too.
I've got the A205-5831, an older model I picked up last year for $350 with rebates, and I've run it nearly 24/7 since December, as my secondary computer. Only complaint is that it's got a really smooth, shiny exterior, so it's a scratch/dust magnet, but it still looks pretty good despite abuse, and I don't want to jinx myself, but I haven't had a single problem with the hardware. ~

Wireless is also important.
Wireless "N" seems to be what most machines come with.
Is there anything better.
I'm going for Altel so I can trade stocks while travelling.
Also want to upgrade to Windows 7 when it's available.
I keep hearing that Vista sucks. |

It has been said if you can afford it
For PC you got to buy antivirus ,firewall , antiflowers
and that is every year , and it's not cheap, plus you got to worry about that , subscription, updates etc
One more very important thing , maintenance how about
defragging , cleaning junk files, fixing registry keys
well guess what, you got to pay for that too
even with all of this you can get something like
conficker or something wilder than that and ur f*cked
You gonna spend many hours to try to make that baby look like mac (think "air dock")
yes you can find some of this stuff free on the net,
but it takes lots of time |

United Kingdom 7/4/2009 2:42 AM | | Re: What is the best computer to buy | Quote | Intel Atom powered "Netbooks" work great, and can be had for $250. You can extend the guarantee for three years for very little (if you are that way inclined). When it packs up, just get another.
I bought two expensive laptops, but find I keep using my Acer One Netbook as first choice. It is small, quiet, light weight, runs cool, uses little power and has plenty of storage space. Does everything a larger laptop does, but at a third of the price! |
