Tornado my butt. This is a simple derailment.
Check out the trees in the background.
Pffft. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 709375
I did. They did exactly what trees do in tornadoes and hurricanes. They went nuts from the wind whipping them around just before impact.
However. Though it is MOST LIKELY A TORNADO... it is possible that it was a down burst. Only the NOAA "experts" doing a damage survey afterwards can definitively say... at least with enough authority to convince an insurance company... so they can then deny the coverage. Really?!?!? You know that may not have been gas. It could have been chemicals. So I would have to say that you are quite mentally impaired. Use your damn head. And, yes, this video is real. duh. |

Not uncommon for a locomotive to have a way to view what the rest of the cars that it is pulling are doing.
Some RVs even have cameras looking out the back for when they are backing up.

OwlTalking User ID: 718147 7/4/2009 3:46 PM | | Re: Freight Train vs. Tornado: Is this a fake video??? | Quote | I like the part in the video where the cars behind the camera start making bumping noises, as if they are empty. then as the car in front of the camera falls to the side, it reveals that more than several cars are already on their sides, tossing up much sparks and dust. Apparently the locomotive is supposed to slow down at that point. However, in the distance the cars still on the track are making up for lost time, still earnest in their endeavor to get to wherever it is they thought they were supposed to go.
Some years ago we had a fully loaded coal train take an unexpected detour to a dead-end siding. I think four of the coal cars were turned inside out, spilling their cargo all about. Both engines and several cars had gone beyond where they were supposed to go, in the dead of night. The only thing amiss besides the wreck proper was a can of half-finished Vienna sausages. The previous train was carrying chemicals, but going the other way, might have warned the dispatcher that the flag to the switch was missing. But since all seemed well, no mention apparently was noted and at some time later the rest of us neighbors heard what sounded like an explosion as the coal cars were turned literally inside out. What are the cars made out of, 3/8th inch steel plate?

And I live in NY. Not supposed to have them out here. But we do. In fact, we had one the day before I left on a trip to Colorado. We landed in Denver, and an hour later we ran into a tornado outside of Colorado Springs. It was like the shit was following me, lol. Still didn't see a funnel though. But did see the biggest hail I ever seen. When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

That tank car carrying flammable material was sooo asking to explode as it came crashing in sparks flying everywhere.
yeah, I was wondering why the liquid gas tank didn't blow up. Quoting: Dread Pirate Roberts
Trains have derailed before.
The engineers who design tankers know that.

yo User ID: 719212 7/6/2009 2:28 AM | | Re: Freight Train vs. Tornado: Is this a fake video??? | Quote | For the guy who says rain meant a tornado was gone... that is completely wrong. Being that you live in "tornado alley" you are more likely used to seeing "classing supercells" with the heavy rain and hail being north and east of the rotation. This is usually the case but you can also have a HP supercell or High Precipitation supercell where the tornado will be rain-wrapped and you will never see it. Hope this helps!
And yes that video is real. To back up the guy who posted about most locomotives having cameras on them, yes they do for reasons such as this; to investigate the causes of accidents, etc. Kind of like why a police car has a dash cam. |

Railroad Establishes Faster Way to Reimburse Residents Inconvenienced After Tornado-caused Derailment
Omaha, Neb., January 18, 2008 – Union Pacific today finalized arrangements to open a claims center for residents inconvenienced after a tornado swept through the Lawrence, Ill., area, causing a train derailment on Monday, January 7.
"We appreciated the quick response, support and patience from residents and first responders after the accident in Lawrence," said Joe Bateman, Union Pacific’s northern region vice president-public affairs.
The claims center will be open Tuesday, January 22, through Thursday, January 24, from 9 a.m-7 p.m. at the Chemung Township Office, 807 Eighth St. (corner of 8th and McKinley Streets), Harvard.
Residents should bring receipts and other documentation verifying any out-of-pocket expenses resulting from being kept away from their residence due to the derailment. Valid photo identification, such as a driver's license or state photo identification card, will be required for proof of residency. Union Pacific claims employees will contact residents who already have filed claims, to arrange appointments during the claim center's hours of operation.
Residents with questions before the Claim Center opens should contact Union Pacific's Chicago claims center at (312) 777-2023 or (312) 777-2026.
