Im do not know the population of the united states, i think its in between 100 million and 300 millions, but for arguments sake lets say there are 100 million, ten percent of that is 10 thousand, now of course we know that the real un employment rate is way more than 10% conservative estimates are between 15-20%, regardless the unemployment rate does not record all the people who have not bothered filing for unemployment or have given up not to mention illegal aliens. 5 or so years ago when unemployment was 4.5% only 60% of the "working age group", as defined by the bureau of labor stats, were employed.
With 10% unemployment I suspect only about 50% of that working age group are employed.
Shadow stats uses the same metrics used during Bush 41's era and they calculate real unemployment is almost 22% today. |

Wind Power - The Guardian made a claim that Scotland is ready to go 100% wind power. "Europe’s largest onshore wind farm, which is already powerful enough to meet Glasgow’s electricity needs" but failed to account for how they plan to do that when there is no wind. Based on the Weather Underground Graph For Glasgow during the week of February 4-10, 2009, the average temperature was -2C (29F). And there was almost no wind on most of those days. No wind means no electricity. On the coldest days, there is no wind – so wind power fails just when you need it the most. On the morning of February 4, the temperature was -7C (19F) and the wind speed was zero.
In order to keep society from lapsing into the dark ages, there has to be enough conventional (coal, natural gas, hydroelectric and nuclear) capacity to provide 100% of the power requirements on any given day.

"Spinning Reserve" means a fully powered up generating station that can take the load when the power source drops off line... (the wind turbines)
Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy have peak load demands of about 4000 and 1600 megawatts during the dead of winter. Combined, that's about 5600 megawatts. For a 24 hour period, that would be over 134,400 MWh of energy. Just to cover one single day of no wind.

I don't think you're doing that with batteries.
One way to get around this is with a peaking reservoir. That's essentially a large lake of watter artificially placed at the top of a mountain in order to store (by pumping water up into it) excess energy. But.. you need a mountain, a dam on top of the mountain, and you have to deal with the possibility of a dam collapse if you overfill it.
