Our country tries to teach respect, but the way we go about it only fosters self-indulgence and lack of work ethic. From an early age, we sign our kids up for biddy sports and everyone gets a trophy. Whoopee! You don't have to work, you just show up and you win! Parents get overly involved, which merely shows the kids they don't have to be good sports, either. The kids get into school and we hand them A's for mediocre work (some schools don't even allow anything below a C because is hurts feelings), and the parents all think they have these really brilliant beings and indulge them some more. So at home, when the kids ask for something they get it (Game Boys, WII, Play Station, their own personal room, their own personal TV, computer, refrigerator).
