Nashville Police confirmed that the second victim in the shooting of former Titans Quarterback Steve McNair was not his wife Mechelle.
Rumors circulated in the downtown area surrounding the murder scene Saturday afternoon that McNair's wife was the second victim. One media outlet reported Mechelle McNair had been in Mississippi at the time of the shooting.
While ruling out McNair's wife as the second victim, police did not identify her pending notification of next of kin.
Meantime, police continued their investigation into the incident Saturday evening. Just after 6:00pm, police towed two vehicles from the scene, a Lincoln Navigator and a Cadillac Excalade.
"The crime scene is being meticulously processed," Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron said. "We have experts who do that, they look for specific evidence. They are looking to put the pieces together."
Police were called to the area around 1:30pm Saturday afternoon after other condo dwellers heard gunshots. Aaron said McNair was shot in the head.

Good Guy: McNair Key in Hurricane Katrina Aid

Saturday, Jul. 4, 2009 - 8:38 p.m. ET

Steve McNair's desire to help his community was enormous, and nothing showed that more than his assistance to Hurricane Katrina victims. As part of package saluting the Good Guys in sports, Paul Attner offered the following in June 2006:

It started with a conversation with Brett Favre.

Steve McNair, then still with the Titans, and Favre are Mississippi natives, and their teams were scheduled to play a preseason game in Nashville three days after Hurricane Katrina. Favre told McNair he was packing the Packers' plane with relief supplies for his state. That led McNair to ask his foundation director, Mike Mu, to arrange a relief drive in Nashville.

By the end of McNair's effort, 20 tractor-trailers had been filled with supplies. More than 800 volunteers helped out, and children brought their piggy banks. Fundraising efforts brought in more than $300,000.

A couple of weeks after the hurricane, the first trucks rolled into Mississippi and serviced areas that the Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency were not reaching. One of the trucks went to McNair's ranch, where his mom supervised the unloading process.

Mu and McNair realized they needed a distribution point, so they began the Steve McNair Distribution Center in Gulfport. That led to weekly deliveries to the center of goods purchased by McNair's foundation.

Later, Favre and McNair contributed to a $150,000 donation to the state's high school and youth football programs.

The bodies of Steve McNair and an unidentified young woman were found today by a longtime friend of McNair’s.

Wayne Neely, who also rents a condominium with McNair, arrived to find the bodies inside the condo on Lea Avenue off Second Avenue South, said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron.

The building at 105 Lea Avenue is registered to Charles Cardwell.

McNair appears to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Aaron said.

Neely and another man, Robert Gaddy, were interviewed by police and released, Aaron said.
UPDATED: 6:20 P.M.

Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron has confirmed that the victim in the double killing was not McNair's wife. The woman killed still has not been named.

Crime scene investigators are meticulously processing the scene, Aaron said.
"Once that processing is done I'll come out with further updates," Aaron said.

A Cadillac Escalade and a Lincoln Navigator were towed away from the scene.

Re: Steve McNair dead at 36, victim of an apparent murder-suicideQuote

NASHVILLE – Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was found dead Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide with a young woman he met at a local restaurant and had been dating for at least a few months.

McNair, who did extensive charity work in Nashville, died of several gunshots and was found on the sofa, police said. Sahel Kazemi, 20, was found alongside him in a Nashville condo he rented. She had a single gunshot wound to her head; a pistol was found near her body.
Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said police were leaning toward certain scenarios based on the evidence, but they hadn’t ruled anything out. Still, they were not actively looking for suspects Saturday night.

“The medical examiner will be conducting autopsies tomorrow,” Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said. “We expect to make additional conclusions after the autopsy process.”

Wayne Neely, a longtime friend of McNair’s who also rents a condominium with the former Tennesee Titans quarterback, arrived Saturday to find the bodies inside the condo, said Aaron.

Though much of the attention was on the condo crime scene, police also swarmed the Cherry Creek apartment complex in Hermitage. They were questioning neighbors who said they often saw McNair visiting Kazemi. Sometimes, neighbors said, she would arrive home in a limousine in the early morning hours. She showed up with a new black car she said was a gift from her boyfriend.

She was arrested in that car, a black Cadillac Escalade registered to she and McNair, just two days before the deaths. She was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to take a breath test.

Earlier Saturday, a black Escalade was towed from the condominium complex where McNair and Kazemi were found dead.

It is not clear whether this is the same vehicle involved in the DUI arrest.

Keith Norfleet, Kazemi’s boyfriend for four years before they broke up five months ago, said he came to pick up the car for Kazemi.

Norfleet said McNair was in the car with her when the stop occurred, a fact that was not in the police affadavit but was confirmed by police Saturday night. McNair later bailed Kazemi out, according to bail bondsmen.

Norfleet said she told him she was seeing McNair, who she met while working as a waitress at Dave & Busters. He was worried about her dating a married man and hopeful they’d get back together. They had been living together for four years, since they moved from her family’s home in Jacksonville, Fla., to Nashville.

“She is the sweetest girl, and she did not deserve this,” Norfleet said upon learning of her death. “He was making her believe they were going to be together, and everything would be perfect.”

McNair is survived by wife, Mechelle McNair, and four sons, Junior, Steven, Tyler and Trent.
