Time to bug out of this sinking ship.
Selling all my stuff (EVERYTHING) and taking a bag of

travel to Romania from there.
Going to live in a castle in a magical country.

Not true...I knew a guy for years who had a biz set up over there and imported the products into the States. He married a Rumanian wife, and got along quite well in the village his biz was based in. |

Many eastern european countries (romainia included)are very poor. they don't pay their customs officials very well. they look for bribes and suckers to make ends meet. if you don't want to believe me, i don't care. by you posing the UK when I mentioned eastern europe, made me think you haven't a clue, and you were making statements without having a clue -- this lead to me assumption that you are a dumbass. i have not only been to romania, i have also written magazine articles about my trip there, and to moldova, bulgaria, macedionia, ukraine, and a lot of other places you have probably never even heard of. so, have a great trip.

I live in Transylvania. Don't make false affirmations, friends. It's not a rich country, but not so poor like those from former Soviet Union. The average earning is about 500 $ per month. The people are friendly, well most of them. In Transylvania you can find Romanians, Hungarians, Germans and Gypsies. And yes, the Dracula's Castle.

But the OP thinks he can just go there as a tourist and stay there and survive? The people there are extremely poor with the exception of a few rich in Bucarest. Many officials are corrupt.
You would need a visa and immigrating will be a lot of paperwork, the OP has said nothing about that. He will also have to relinquish his U.S. citizenship in an embassy. Its not as easy as taking a plane there and claiming "I'm a Romanian now". Therefore i say the OP is trolling. |

I'm aware of all this. It's just red tape that I am prepared to undertake. I appreciate your input too. If needed, I would leave the country every 90 days and get a new Visa, should obtaining citizenship be an issue.
How you described the Hierarchy there, rich/poor is really no different than here. In fact, here I fit in the middle class society based on my income. There, I would meet the criteria of middle/upper class based on my income.
I am entering that country to live a humble life, and not to exploit the people or the country. |

You can not enter in Romania with plenty of gold. You can not bribe the custom guys, forget the bullshit movies about such a theme. I live in a modest town, about 250 000 inhabitants. There are poor and rich people mixed, like everywhere. The richest guy in my town has a fortune about 25 millions $.
