both fires UPS related?
what's making the batteries go boom?
Odd for sure.....if I were running a server farm?....I'd be checking my input voltage on the service in....and checking the cycles with a scope too.....
Most people do not know this but you run something like say a fan motor on a 50hz electrical system when it is made for 60hz?....it runs at a slower speed.....it's how a variable freq motor control functions.
A little over voltage...and all your cooling fans run a bit slow for a while?...well....steady electricity is important...let's put it that way....
The UPS systems are also power conditioners. No over/under voltage spikes get tru their filters.
Voltage is not the same as frequency, The frequency is supplied by the power authority and the UPS`S are directly tied to the service.
Your senerio makes no sence.,,,,,,, just sayin Quoting: Anonymous Coward 718855
It's the UPS' that are causing the fires....try plugging a 208-220 UPS into 240-260V and watch what happens to it after a while.....How easy might it be for a unility to alter the cycles on a certain sub leg....
Isn't sence like a breath mint or something?....just sayin.... ____________________________________________________

Depends on whether or not it is a "Standby" power supply or a true "Uninterruptable" power supply. A standby power supply will allow normal powerline AC to the load. If the power fails a static switch will make the transfer within a few milliseconds thus providing power backup through the batteries.
A true Uninterruptable power supply will have the incoming power converted over to DC to keep the batteries charged. The batteries will then feed the inverter section to output PWM 60Hz out to the load. Voltage output will depend upon initial engineering and the load itself. A true UPS system will not allow transients, voltage spikes or dips, brown-outs and black-outs directly to the load. Thus keeping the power to the load stable and clean until the batteries shit their lunch. The greatest weapon of mass destruction is a closed mind. |

LOL, I`m a electrician that builds data centers, lol.
supply whatever voltage you want into these UPS systems, it wont matter. The system will instantly go off line and supply power from the batteries through the inverter untill the main power is corrected or untill the batteries run dry.

Get this..
Peer1 one of the largest hosts in Canada today had a "fire" that took out the entire facility...
They are claiming it was an explosion from the "UPS" backup system..
I know this because we have some shit hosted there and it went down and we've been trying to get shit working for the last 15 hours..
This is odd to me because this NEVER HAPPENS and there was another fire with an "explosion" in a Network Operations Center in Texas last week!
/me thinks something is up with this shit... Quoting: ^TrInItY^

Canada seems to be particularly vulnerable to solar activity.
EMP-Shielded Power Grids Under Development
[link to tech.slashdot.org]
The solar storm that occurred in March of 1989 blacked out the entire power grid in Québec Canada in less than two minutes. The solar storm in 2003 caused a massive blackout in the northeastern part of the United States creating $10 billion with damage to electrical systems. Therefore problems created by solar storms are not myths and stories but indeed possibilities based upon ongoing historical events. Scientists believe countries need to be prepared for problems. The United States and Canada have been two countries at the forefront of assessing these concerns. |

The input transformers are only designed to handle a certain range of voltage and frequency, and are designed to run optimally at their specified target range...110, 220, whatever.
Take a transformer that's designed to see 95-130 volts @60 hz on the primary side and feed it 85 volts at 50 hz for a few hours and it will overheat and probably melt down the windings. To visualize the coming apocalypse, imagine, if you will, Oprah & Rosie O'Donnell wrestling for the last rib at an all-you can-eat Bar-B-Q... |

this is true... the last grid frequency detector I put in at a factory would blow the main breaker if the frequency drops to 59.5... they have a LOT of sensitive transformers and motors in there that can't handle frequency sags... "knowing and not DOING, is like NOT KNOWING at all" |

April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Energy Australia, the electricity distributor for Sydney, said it completed urgent repairs after Australia’s biggest city was yesterday hit by a second power outage in a week.
The transformer, a key part of the electricity network in the northern part of the business district in Sydney, was re- powered last night and normal services should return this morning, it said. Managers in 20 buildings have been asked to reduce non-essential electricity use in the city, including air conditioning, it said.
Saturday’s outage, which lasted about 75 minutes, closed the Sydney harbor tunnel and stranded people in lifts and buildings. Power to about 50,000 homes and businesses in the city was cut.
Last week, some 70,000 homes and businesses in the city lost power for almost two hours week after the failure of a 132,000-volt cable. Quoting: Lastone 718662
