Question 1: Did you come out and test my original smart meter with your own equipment and verify it was indeed doubling the kwh usage?
Answer 1: Yes
Question 2: Did you then install a brand new smart meter and test it and it too registered double the kwh usage?

I battled with this a couple of years ago. Asshole came out with his excuses. I showed him usage charts & meter readings. Black & white, in his face.
He came off sounding like a paid shill, called me a liar.
I waved the proof in his face again, told him he was the liar, then verbally tossed him out. Followed with a complaint to the PUC.
My meter readings are now in line with usage. Next step, changing from the gouging 16.8 per Kwh to a company charging 10.2 per Kwh.
Trinity, you deserve a medal !

Co-Ops have notoriously incompetent engineering and technical services. Power distribution is an almost arcane knowledge by todays standards, and the small co-ops can almost never afford the good ones. I'm betting every one of the 20,000 they installed is wrong. They probably bought them wrong from the start. |

One other point I forgot to share. When we were away on vacation, I turn the amps "off" in the garage as a test to what change would be reflected for a vacation time on the electric bill for major appliances. WE WERE ASTOUNDED. The bill was less by $100.00 for about 10 days. Lots of vampires. You might want to consider that as a alternative. Electric drain is electric drain. |

Probably not a bad idea, for those who are still on the old meters, to go back thru your old records and have them handy - find out what your average usage is. If you no longer have them, call the power company and ask to do an audit of your account as far back as possible and printed out and mailed to you. They should be able to do this.

It doesn't really matter if there's some condition at your property that causes the meter to go wrong, by the way.
If they don't have a meter that's flexible enough to be accurate under a wide variety of real-life conditions, they are responsible. That property of design, where something is flexible enough to be accurate under an expected range of real-life conditions is called "robustness".
If the new smart meter isn't as accurate as the old ones, for whatever reason, it's a defective design, even if there's some condition at your house or property that caused the old one to run properly and the new ones to fail. Quoting: Andromeda
The only problem with that is the possibility of opening up another can of worms. Many older houses have inadequate or outdated service and/or wiring that would surely cause inaccurate readings in these new meters. you could easily create a class action lawsuit.
run an ad in the local paper for those that have a smart meter and if they feel they are getting screwed.
tell them how to check it.
get the best attorney.
